Has anyone repaired the fuel gauge? I have the 1974 and I have two butboth have the wire broken. I read somewhere that it is resistor wire I was thinking that it might be possible to splice(?) new resistor wire in it. |

Do you mean the sender in the fuel tank?
It's very simple and the usual problem?
Dirt and grime on the resistor wire so no contact at all.
See the insides: http://kharon.suomiforum.com/www/ghia3/IMG_0788.jpg
As you can see from the cover, it had that brownish stuff everywhere, also inside. No idea what it was but obviously residue from fuel.
Float slides along the wire varying the resistance and once the wire/sliding contacts get dirty, no contact.
I cleaned the wire (very carefully, it's not strong) with chrome polishing paste (Autosol in this case) and the sliding pieces with contact cleaner spray.
Works like a charm again. |

The brown residue is fuel varnish an lead residue. Some of it can be removed with a strong solvent like MEK.
The wire can be replaced with careful work and soldering. You have to get the right resistance wire. It is nickle-chrome (ni-chrome) wire. Mcmaster carr and Aircraft spruce company among others should have what you need. Make sure to accurately measure the length and then accureatly measure the resistance on that length to be able to get wire with the right resistance per inch/foot.
