I'm rebuilding a 40hp, need P&C, thinking about going with the 83mm big bore kit. Do they require any machineing to the case, heads, or am I better off staying with the 77mm P&C ?

There are slip in bib bore kits for 40hp.. recently I saw an add for Wolfsburb West in the classifieds ( can't find it now though) that said they had some "Mahle" brand ones from a recent limited production run.

Pricey though. Might want to call them and check. otherwise you see some sets for sale now and again.

Although the walls are thinner than the 77mm they are still as thick as say stock 1600 85.5 cylinders. So I can't see where you would have any trouble. I have used them and not had any.

Are you sure about that Nate, I don't recall ever seeing any '92's for 40HP???

anyone found any more information out on this??

im after a 83mm kit as well

Are all the 40hp big bore kits slip in or do some require the case and or heads to be machined. Vintage Parts Inc is the only place I've found 83mm P&Cs on the net. $175. Don't know about the quality or If machining is required. Anyone else know where to find them? Please help us. ](*,)

hey G-wood todd.....

they were slip in.....my friend has one on his 1960 bug, and there were literally just bolt in :)

keifernet Sun Feb 13, 2005 11:06 am

All the ones I have ever used were slip in.

and did they give a noticable improvement in power??

keifernet Sun Feb 13, 2005 11:20 am

nothing radical but the addtional cc's put a bit more pep in the step.

I mean going from 1200 to near 1400 cc's does make some diff for sure.

Have you gone through the classifieds thouroughly? seems I have seen a few sets on here the last few weeks. maybe they got snatched up though.

The 83mm p+c's,with a 30pict-1 carb will bump your hp up to about 54! Not too bad for around $200

G-wood Todd Sun Feb 13, 2005 12:43 pm

Can you use a different crank/cam settup with the 83's to bump hp even more or should you just simply use a stock crank/cam setup. Thanks, the info is greatly appreciated. Todd

BFY selling them for $ 225, seems high to me.

gerg Sun Feb 13, 2005 1:34 pm

BFY advertised last week to call and mention the Samba add for $200. I want to get some too . . I think it's a good way to stealth in a bit of extra HP on my 40Hp restoration . . . . only the purists will cry :D

keifernet Sun Feb 13, 2005 1:40 pm

yeah they seem pricey.

not much point in adding a cam or stroking unless you have some old Okrasa parts your adding!

the small valves in the heads limit what the engine can do. I suppose a 1 step up from stock cam might do something without going overboard but I have never tried it.

I have added the later rocker arms which the ratio is different/ better.

Or I suppose that 1.25 to one original style VW rockers might be the way to go without adding a cam.

I was going to ask about the 1.25 rockers as a good friend of mine has a set I can score for like $40. Would that offer even more punch from the nimble 40 ? I have little knowledge of how that stuff affects overall HP or power.

1.25:1 rockers would be like having a mild cam installed so yes it should ad a measure of performance... this was also one of the original parts/mods that Gene Berg and Darrel Vittone came up with for Empi all those year ago!

OK. You guys rock. Sounds like, stock crank, stock cam, 83mm big bore kit, stock heads, 1.25:1 rockers. How bout dual carbs? I've seen dual webers for single port for less than $400. I'm guessing they work for 40hp single ports as well as 1500/1600 single ports. Will the dual carbs be worth the investment with small 40hp heads or should I just stick with stock carb. Anything else I'm missing?

keifernet Mon Feb 14, 2005 9:15 am

Small valves being the drawback, dual carbs would work but you would have to jet them accordingly. Might take some tinkering to get them dialed in but it is doable.

There was some basic and good Hi perf info on the 40hp in the old book.

There may be some other old school guys around who have more input on tuning tweaking the old 40hp who might post up too.

Yes any add-on will net more power, and since everyone is running dual port motors,it would be cool to see a built single port motor! With the 1.25 rockers and dual carbs, you should expect about another 10-15 hp,knocking you up to almost 70,while still rertaining good gas mileage! This setup is what a friend has in his '65 and his car runs very strong, able to sustain 75mph all day,and will do a decent launch when he wants to! People have flagged him down to check out the motor, then drop jaw when they see its just a single port!
