What car did these go on? http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=155620 I have had one of those for 20 years and never knew the application.

You could order 12v on 356's as an option before it became standard in 67 on 912's. So I believe this is part of that option.
This is what I have on my split along with a 12 star coil and 12v 'split' generator. I used my splits generator case and converted to 12v internals. It looks and operates like a stock 6v unit from 1950 but puts out 12v.

I always thought the "D" regulator was for Pre A's. Did they also have a 12 volt option or was that regulator used in later cars as well? :?

Some of the early race cars were 12 volt way before the
production cars. Also that part number starts with 'rs' which usually means renns sport, or race car. The guy who could probobly help you out is Joe at http://www.356electrics.com/ .
