Need to sell a 240Z rally car first. |

Checking in, just dug mine out of the weeds after parking it there 10yrs ago. Yeah they are kinda rare. I cry when I think of how many I sent to the crusher over the years.
Restoration will begin in a month! |

So, my father-in-law says, "Hey, you used to drive a VW...there's a guy down the street that has one he wants to get rid of, if you are interested." Now, it's been 20 years since I pulled an engine, but we go down to look and find a first owner, 1967 Fastback with 60,000 orignal miles - the good news. The bad news is that it was last started in 1979, when it was driven into the garage and the key was promptly lost. They pushed it out of the garage to make room in 2000, where the elements played havoc with it - the bad news. A leaky front windshield trashed the dash, and 12 years of dirt road farm driving left a shot carpet and fair amount of rust in the fender areas. The price, however, was right ($500), so I bought it and towed it to its new home.
The question I have is...what now? I'm fairly good at keeping a car alive, or fixing it when I know what is broken, but what about resurrecting one from the dead? Do I just throw in a new battery and hope for the best? Spin it only for a compression check? Go ahead and do a top-end overhaul, figuring that a quarter-century of neglect is reason enough? Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!

I would definately start with a tune up. Replace fuel lines. Check the brakes. A good check over everything and make sure that it is SAFE. Then I would go from there with whatever needed the most attention.
And sounds like you got one hell of a score for only 500.00. Got any pics?

before turning it over, put some marvel mystery oil in each cylinder and let it sit overnight, drain and replace the oil, remove the gas tank, drain and clean it, as stated above- replace all lines including rubber brake lines |
