i've seen a thread that talks about a triple filament rear bulb and holder, unique to 1960. has anyone else heard of this? if so can you shed any light, and does anyone stock them?

1960 uses double filament, one filament handles the running lights, the other handles brakes and turn. You need to use the correct turnsignal switch to properly opperate the brake lights in conjuction with the turnsignals while using the 2 filament bulbs (1157)

so if you have your foot on the brake, does the indicator still flash?

On cars like this with just a single double filament bulb on each side in back, what the turn signal switch does - is it passes the current for the brake lights straight through it to both brake lights when the switch is in the center position. When you switch it for a turn, it will disconnect the brake light current from that side of the car, then connect that, plus the wire for your front turn signal on that side, to your flasher relay. On the other side of the car, the front light will still be isolated and the rear will still be connected to your brake light switch and will only light up when you have the brake pedal depressed. That makes for kind of a complicated turn signal switch.

sorry to be a pain,

but can you confirm that my understanding is correct.

if the brake and an indicator is pressed at the same time the light will flash off and on, (rather than on and off). ie the indicator will cut the brake light.

Yes the same fillament used for the brake light is used for the indicator, so when you have the brakes on and then indicate the appropriate side will start flashing while the other side remains steady whilst you have you foot on the brake pedal, release the brake and the non indicating side will go out leaving the other side still flashing. As has been already stated its all to do with the indicator switch on your column.

They're right...you need a 6 wire t/signal switch with the thin round metal shaft. It has 4 outputs, (2 front signals, 2 rear signal/brakes) and 2 inputs (1 brake light input, 1 input from the flasher relay)

The idiot PO of my '67 kombi had triple fillament bulbs in the taillights and judging by the melted spot in one of the lenses they gat pretty hot.
