Just found your thread and it's like I've been living with you and the bus for all these years :)

I need to do more of this with my Mango ( '58 ) :)

Doing some rocker and floor patching in the '61 Mango this winter.

Lots of rocker rot and the floor was starting to sag a bit.

Fortunately not too bad beyond the inner rocker.

Chop-chop

Rear cargo floor.

Front cargo floor.

Inner rocker fitting.

I kept the cargo latch rod floor plate and middle seat mount (I previously installed).

Test fit outer rocker.

All that Gerson-green looks so much nicer.

Nice looks much safer now. Are u going to paint blend or rock the funky green with the mango. Love your mango stan

Stanagon Mon Mar 02, 2015 8:52 am

I'll paint blend. I've got a good mango match and want to have the protection of real paint vs. primer.

Made some more progress with my '61 Mango bus cargo rocker and floor repairs.

I flanged the top of this patch for a smooth seam. My plan is to glue the flange area with 2-part SEM body glue.

I used a pneumatic hole punch on the rocker stiffener to weld it to outer rocker.

Nice that I don't have to grind the welds in the door seal channel.

Long rocker support installed.

Rear cargo side floor patch installed, and lower C-pillar anchored in place.

looking awesome stan. I havent been able to do anything since I hurt my back last week. MRI on tuesday. My front beam is coming out too.

Made a bunch of progress on cargo door rocker and floor patches in March.

Small C-pillar bottom patch.

Small B-pillar bottom patch.

Front wheel well patch.

Rear wheel well patch.

Front floor patch welded in.

Fitting rocker into place.

Rocker clamped and ready to spot weld.

Rocker welded in.

Cargo latch detail.

Lower rear quarter welded in. Glue didn't really work so well.

Gaps look good.

Rocker profile matches pretty well.

Still rockin' the bullet holes.

I also coated the roof rust with some rusty metal primer.

I love your bus, nice progress. As far as rust like this goes the rusty metal primer will slow it down some but it will come back unless you grind it down and chemically convert it (phosphoric acid) or blast it.

I like these along with wire wheels:

Then some high zinc primer/epoxy primer/etch primer, then primer, then paint. Sorry if I'm telling you stuff you already know.

Like the way you have keeped the old girl original. (Rat look ) gotta love the old history of these old busses.... no shiney stuff for me... good work

Stanagon Tue May 26, 2015 5:25 am

The rusty metal primer is just to get something on the roof to slow down the rust. I know more serious measures are needed for long term protection.

I plan on keeping most of the character this bus has, no restoration planned here, just some sympathetic preservation.
