Are they all the same?

:?:

Well, there's early swing axles, which are all the same, and then there's the later IRS axles, which are different for manual and automatic transmissions.

Sorry for the vague question.

How about this:

Are all T3 swing axle axles the same length with the same tubes and mounts etc?

Are there "shorter" and "longer" T3 swing axles?

I know that T3 swingaxle axles are longer than T1's, but by how much? And are they all the same?

But based on your answer, I get that all the T3 swingaxle axles are the same.

Thanks for the info Bubbles.

Good question. I'd like to know as well.

I've heard of people using short axles from a Type 1 on a Type 3 to gain room under the fender (along with Type 1 brakes). Can't confirm this, as I haven't experienced it first hand...

NO, there were early and late swing axles. Do a search here on TheSamba. I think someone had pictures of an oddball axle set up that showed up on a T34.

The conversion to the Type 1 short axles is done to gain tire clearence/compensate for wheel offset. I found the following information when I researched:
26 11/16" short spline - T1 61-66
27 11/16" short spline - T1 67
28 7/16" long spline - T1 68 and T3
Short splines are 2", long spline is 2.5"

If you're doing the conversion you need the following parts from the Type1 donor: axles, axle tubes, and bearing carrier/cap.

On you're T3 brake drum, you'll need to have about .5" taken off the snout to allow the axle nut to fit.

Thanks for the info, but I'm actually going the other way.

I want to run T3 axles on a T1 transaxle to gain as much rear width as possible.

Type 3 swing have a long axel and long spline, the axel tubes are actually the same length, the end castings are different. Most folks don't have the time or inclination to punch out the retaining pin and just grab the tubes at the same time they grab the axels. If you're gonna put them on your type one you're gonna need a hardened spacer, about .5" to go in between the end of the drum and the crown nut, or if you're going with a custom bolt pattern you can order new drums with a longer hub.

Thanks for the info.

It's actually for my buggy.

In order to get some more travel out of the stock T1 swingaxle, I was planning on installing T3 axles and coupling them to the existing 4-bolt rear discs. I would also use the different end castings for the new shock mounts.

Maybe.

I have seen the .5" hardened spacers for sale, but usually they are for IRS applications. The swing axles spacers are a bit thinner.

hello,

I want to do the same conversion to my notch. (61).

Can I use a complete gearbox (with breaks) from a 60-64 bug ?

After this conversion, wich handbreak cable and shock absorber can I use ?

Thank youu

type 1 axles, with a "type 1" tranny, but to change from a type 1 to type 3 tranny you just need to change the hockey stick in the nose cone.

Disk brakes are type 1 4 lugs.

For the Type 3 conversion to shorter axles and tubes: wouldn't that eliminate the auxiliary spring as the Type 1 axle tubes do not have the guides welded to them?

yes

Is it safe to run w/out the aux. springs? Are they necessary? I ask because I recently bought the 26inch tubes and axles to fit some wider tires out back. I didn't read anything in the forum here about this so it kind of came as a suprise to me when I got them.

Could I just cut the appropriate length off the type 3 tubes and use them over the type 1 axles to make it all work?

Last of the 20 questions: ISP West sells some billet bearing caps specifically for the purpose of using type 1 axles/tubes on a type 3. They are supposed to be altered in some way from the original type 1 caps to work better. Are these necessary? Old Light what did you use?

Thanks for any advice, just starting down the road on my first restoration.

Thank you
