Thanks! White on Red cars have been a long time favorite of mine.

Sorry didn't mean to bust your balls. LOL

Hmmm, He says it is a '68, but he also says it is an Automatic. Something is not right here.
I emailed him about the automatic and the VIN that is under the rear seat.

Russ- The first autos with IRS were '68s.... I've seen several of them!

Russ Wolfe Mon Apr 18, 2005 9:59 pm

I have never seen one. I was told that there were only about 15 of them made, and they never left Germany.

Russ Wolfe Mon Apr 18, 2005 10:00 pm

Besides, I want to know what the VIN number is under the rear seat. That is the legal one.
He only shows the one by the spare tire.

Tram Tue Apr 19, 2005 12:11 am

That's strange. I can think of two of them, both Fastbacks, and both '68s, that were delivered to Henry Motors in Akron, Ohio. I also knew of a white '68 Automatic Squareback. I mentioned it in the thread about Type 3 scripting last week.
I never heard that there were very few of them, and that they never left Deutschland, unless you're talking specifically about Notchbacks. THAT may very well be the case.
I agree that we need to verify the VIN on the tunnel. It's amazing how they screwed around with model years on titles, etc.
Whether that Notch is a '68 or '69, it's still a rare car with an auto. Too bad it's not injected, and closer to Oregon, or I'd be all over it! :D

Hopefully he'll reply with that VIN. Let us know!

Russ Wolfe Tue Apr 19, 2005 8:21 am

Well, he hasn't answered my email about the VIN number yet.

Notched Tue Apr 19, 2005 3:39 pm

That car also has 65-67 wrap around signals, and the same era rear reflector housings.

VIN under hood makes it a '68, right? Are you thinking it has a different pan, Russ?

Looks like a really solid car for the East.

That is what I am thinking. The guy has a '68 title, so the plate in the trunk matches the title. Those 2 rivets are not much security.

Russ Wolfe Tue Apr 19, 2005 3:52 pm

Went back and looked under the back seat, and the resolution of his camera was not good enough. I did notice that all the bolts are not in place under the rear seat.
:(

Notched Tue Apr 19, 2005 5:19 pm

Early (pre 69) auto Notchbacks sure are cool. I haven't seen too many of them.

Russ Wolfe Tue Apr 19, 2005 5:35 pm

Well, I got an email back from the guy. All He says is that is the VIN that is on his title. And the automatics were available in 1967. So, he is avoiding the issue, or he doesn't know any difference.

Tram Tue Apr 19, 2005 7:53 pm

I think he's got a Frankennotch and I don't mean Al Franken!

Russ Wolfe Tue Apr 19, 2005 8:20 pm

That is what I am thinking. With the '66-67 front turnsignals and the rear reflectors. The '68 tilte, and the automatic. Plus, the bad engine, and a lot of the engine tin is missing.

drivingpenguin Tue Apr 19, 2005 10:03 pm

hey guys, i may go look at it to straighten out the vin thing... but let's suppose it IS a frankennotch... what other telltale signs are there?

he says the auto tranny is good - of course the engine doesn't run so i can't drive it to check. are there any other indicators that the tranny is shite?

if the tranny IS junk... i read here that new ones are $$$ - (but i found one for 200 on thesamba). i also just searched and found how it's a pain in the butt to switch to a manual... but i happen to have a 67 notch as a donor for the manual trans, flywheel/clutch parts, shift linkage, pedal cluster etc. but can you put a 67 manual on that IRS suspension? hell maybe i'd just take the whole swingaxle suspension from the 67 (can you even do THAT?)

i'm chompin for a notch cuz mine's too rusted. what do you think this thing is worth (if it's a frankennotch)?

Russ Wolfe Wed Apr 20, 2005 7:07 am

If youu can go look at it, Good. That is what I did with my T34, ans saw that it could be rebuilt, and the VIN number matched.
Check the number on the frame in the middle under the rear seat. That number that is there, is the legal number in most states. All the rest of the "tags" can be changed too easy. It is in the rectangular area right in the middle, where the factory left out the sound deadener.

drivingpenguin Wed Apr 20, 2005 9:13 am

thanks russ, i'll definitely check that vin. any idea if a swingaxle suspension/manual tranny combo can be put on an auto pan? i know the manual tranny is bolted onto horns whereas the auto w/ irs uses a different mount, but can that horn assembly be bolted on to an auto pan? i guess i just don't know the differences since i've never seen one.

how do the autos drive anyway? are they much slower than the sticks?

also, what's the difference in engines for an auto vs stick? my shop manual seems to indicate they're different, but i can't find the difference??
