OK OK OK I know I could start a world war over this  but, personally I find them really ugly and they could be a demise of bugs worse then rust itself.

At the sametime I appreciate the work that goes into these cars but, can only hope this is a fad that will pass... Most of the Volks Rods I have seen would never be legal on an Australian road.

I have nothing against modified VW's they truly can look great but, Volks Rods  hmmm

What do you think?

honus Wed Apr 20, 2005 6:42 am

are you talking about real Rods, or rat rods, or hood rides? Personally, I like real rods, don't really like rats, and will probably never understand hood rides, no offense.

KSims1868 Wed Apr 20, 2005 6:48 am

I think he's talking about REAL Volks-Rods.

Like THESE:

I think REAL rods look a little dorky, unless the roof is removed also:

Kudos to CLiff and his car...

I like 'em. I could see one in my dream stable of VW's.

"Anybody can restore a car, it takes a real man to cut one up!"

Sorry guys yeah I think you call them rat rods... If you look in the gallery at "other VW's" you will see some new pics posted by "dayz" Credit to his effort and hard work but, just not my cup of tea

The pic above with the flame job is tolerable I guess... Nice Rod!

They just look WRONG :(

im a proud member of volksrods.com. and asking a question like that isnt going to get a majority answer. we have so many different style of volksrods that there isnt one set style to them, some you may like some you may not, some are trucks, some have ford suspension etc etc. it only matters what you like, i mostly love any car that is built with a lot of kustom work, be it a vw or a Chevy.
i agree that in Australia it would be very hard to get them fully engineer approved and road legal but like it or not its here to stay, its far from a fad. and like we always tell people with a problem about what we do......we dont take prescious restored stock bugs and cut them up, we nearly always bring bugs back to life that have been deemed junkyard scrap, so dont worry we arent hurting your standard bugs, we are merly giving a whole new breath of life into what a lot of you guys toss away, a second chance if you will and we dont cut corners either, they arent some kind of crapper unstable dangerous road vehicle, we put just as much care into these as you guys do...we wont ever all get along with this topic and we arent trying to, thats why we all ave our own cars to do what we want to. enjoy driving, who cares about the rest of it

vwfye Thu Apr 21, 2005 12:24 pm

ever seen 35 57 bel airs lined up together? the only one that gets all the attention from non purists is the highly body mod'd one... why? because the rest all all different colors of the same ol' same ol'. same with resto-cal, cal-look and vintage... though the color changes, most are the same thing over, and over, and over again. welcome to the mindset of a volksrodder... we just want something uniquely unique. it isn't a 'screw you' to the rest of the scene, it is just something that fits our already twisted concepts of reality. so, sit back and enjoy the vast array of the volksrod banner... there is no cookie cutter formula. just the mantra of "cut, weld, pound, drive".

thanks for the kind words my man. We all put alot of work into all of our cars. Personally I'm not into the whole resto look of volkswagens. You don't like the whole volksrod look. To each his own right :D

Keep on wrenching away everyone! :)

I can appreciate quality worksmanship regardless of what kind of car it is. I never really thought about it but it would probably be cost prohibitive (and stupid - I'm pretty sure we all agree here) to buy a fully restored Beetle and then start chopping it up. If someone can keep a VW out of the crusher then they're doing a good thing.

pistolpete76 Thu Apr 21, 2005 1:36 pm

right on oc63rag, thats the right way of looking at it

Kudos to all you guys for keeping this conversation civil. I am a member of volksrods.com as well, and I have to say that in my opinion these guys are doing some amazing work. ALot of their cars arnt my cup of tea either, but I always find alot of new ideas and gain alot of inspiration from their creativity and hard work. I love just about any example of a VW you guys could come up with, I have owned 7 of them so far, none with the same style. When I get my latest project on the road, it will probly be a combination of Cal,German,Rod and a few other looks with my own personal twists on it. It's all about driving what you like.

And like was said before, we usualy start out with beaters or junk cars and turn them into something truely unique.

Notched Thu Apr 21, 2005 2:40 pm

I hate them. VWs should be all stock. Gas included.

Just like your avatar.
I love stock as well as custom bugs. I believe what the guys at Volksrods.com are doing is breathing new life into cars that most people wouldn't think twice about throwing away. I don't think all of them started out as junkers but not all race bugs or full blown customs did either. Those guys who did save the cars from the scrap yard, more power to them. I have seen some of the cars on that site in person and I must say, the fabrication skills skills of these guys is second to none.

I think what they are doing is just plain stupid.....Why????

Why not!!! It is something different and it stands out in a crowd. It's the same reason that the fenderless  car I took to the Vintage Volkswagen Club of America show at Kelley Park last weekend was scheduled for a photoshoot with a vdub magazine within five minutes of arriving at the show! Oh and it took home a plaque as well!

By the way 57drag, how are the suicide doors coming along
