When I had in my post that my rebuilt 1776cc engine in my bus was running a little hot, someone suggested using synthetic oil in the engine because there would be less friction and, thus, less heat generated.
Boy, was he right. I put 20/50 Castol motor oil in the engine and drove it around Chico, today. The forecast high temperature was 105 degress in the shade. The VDO oil temperature gauge never got a reading higher than 218 degrees, where before, with 20/50 Castrol motor oil in the engine, the gauge was showing a reading of 230 to 235 degrees under the same circumstances.
I can't remember who you were, but thanks a lot! |

Synthetic oil is good stuff, but handle it with care.
I had my Passat in for it's annual state inspection the other day and the mechanic, who I've known for a long time, told me that another mechanic told him that synthetic oil can get into your skin much easier than old fossil oil. Supposedly Nitril (sp?) gloves (the blue ones) are necessary to keep this from happening. Just passin' on what I heard. |
