Great to hear this news Slip356, I hope you will post a photo of you and Johnny on this thread for all of us to see. I just got my book in the mail last night and love this little hand written "Deer-Bus" he drew on the back of the envelope which I will tape inside the book. Good luck with the snow.
Just arrived:

Bought John's new book, 'A bus will take you back' He & I used to drinks beer together, swap lies etc at many Midwest VW camp outs, like so many of his friends at Fun fest in Effingham, Chippawa Valley VW club campout in Eau Claire, WI and of course Busses Nowhere Neat The Arch and others. His dog Scotty and my Mickey (RIP) would play for hours while we got pleasantly plastered.
John put a nice note with his book indicating he and his new sweetheart are living in his newly built cabin in Eagle River, Wi about 25 miles from me. He indicated it took him three years to build the cabin while living in the bondo condo, his bus, with the wood burning stove. Must have been interesting at -30f that we get here in winter.
He invited me to his cabin for a beer and as soon as the snow and salt are gone (maybe July?) as we are getting over a foot of new stuff as I wright this post I will get my 78 Westy out of storage and take him up on the invite with my new pal Willy.
He indicates he is ready to get back into the VW scene and looks forward to VW shows again this summer. I can't wait!

I'd like to say thank you to the TheSambarino's for bringing this book to my attention - As I'm in the UK I downloaded a A Bus Will Take You There on my Kindle - what a great read - easily the best 'bus' book I have read - and I love John's philosophical outlook on life, relationships and people - would love to read his latest one now - but its not on Kindle yet, will investigate getting it sent to the UK.

As someone earlier said its along the lines of 'Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance' which I read many years ago - this is a book that stays with you, such a calming and laid back read...
Cant recommend it highly enough =D>

Welcome to the club of folks that LOVE John Lago! I only hope that you get a chance to meet him someday as some of us have had the privilege to do. He's an incredible soul.

Hey Dick M., see you again at BNNTA? I've got a feeling that John might make an appearance there too?

I got copies of both old and new through Amazon 2 weeks ago. Half way through the 1st book and love it.

I read both of his bus books, they are great. He captures the concept that you are not only going somewhere in a VW bus, you ARE somewhere.
I will order "The Reference Point" and read it too.

I would love to meet Johnny and give his hand a shake.

Bill,
Certainly plan on BNNTA this Labor Day. Westy is in great shape as I did considerable work this past winter.

Sold the D.C. with the Raby engine in two days on Old Bug, Randy Carlson did a great job for me. Will tell you about it when we next meet.

Won't make Fun Fest this year as Chippewa Valley VW club camp out (Eau Claire, WI) is same weekend. Kind of expect John there as well.

Haven't visited John yet but plan on it soon as snow & salt is finally gone in Northern WI. Hope to get some pics of John, log cabin & bondo condo & will post here if he is OK with it.

Dick
