View original topic: Seat Stand Rubber

Hey I have a 77 baywindow, and it only has rubber on the part of the seat stand under the seat. I see that some vendors sell rubber mats that go on the side of the stand as well, but don't see much consistency in the years that these mats cover. Has anyone installed these on a 77 bus?

Thanks,
Bill

I installed the ones that wrap around the seat pedestal in my '71 from Wolfsburg West. You are close enough to drive over there, just stay off that 91 Fwy during rush hours whatever you do.

I was happy with the fit on my '71. They are textured just like the originals. Get a good strong adhesive and work in sections and get a bunch of heavy things like bricks and metal weights lined up to hold the material in place. I used a silicone adhesive. Start from the back and work to the front of the seat pedestal in 3 phases (back, side, then front). Make sure you glue down each section so that the next section will fit properly. In other words, do not pull tightly on a section, then glue it down so that the next section will have excess material.

So what brand of silicone adhesive did you use? I went to Lowe's today and was bombarded by way too many choices to sif through. Thanks

Were the originals glued down?

Yep. Have you ever tried to take one off a bus in a yard? You have to be VERY careful.

i have these in my 71, without adhesive. yes the "tabs" tend to come out of the slots but i have yet to push (hammer) the slot tabs down on the walkthrough area. the area behind the bulkhead is secured by the aluminum strip that holds the panel in place. i love them they fit well.

"preciate the extra link. Weird thing is that when I did a search for adhesive, I found the thread that I replied to. I didn't start this one. Then you gave the link to another thread with the same subject heading.

Oh yeah, the seat stand surrounds that I'm using I pulled out of a yard. Unfourtunately not all of the flaps that fit into the "lip" are all there. Hence my wanting to use an adhesive. I think that my mats have a bit of brown in them... Did VW come out with brown seat stand surround mats? Champagne Editions? I think they'll look good in my Dakota Beige Westy.

With a Bamboo floor, methinks.

Hiya Dave,

There were definitely brown seat surround rubber mats. My 1970 Deluxe came with both brown seat surrounds and floor mats. However, these mats were clearly brown and not even close to black. I'm thinking that you may well have "Champagne Mats".

By the way, I've had nothing but good luck with 3M's 77 adhesive spray.

No prob.I'm thinking of doing this project myself, too. I might decide to remove the old gunk where the seat rubber was, then paint the area. The driver side rubber is fine, though, so i will have to see about it.
