I checked the search engine, and I couldn't find anything to help me with what syle hubcaps would be correct for my August 52 Split. I have the 16" rims, do the caps have to be a different size? Also Big Logo or the small, and if small is there a certain style of small logo? If any one has a picture it would be helpfull, thanks.
Gary

1949-65 used the same hubcaps. Small VW logo. 16" & 15" all used the same size cap. 1948 was the only year with the large logo VW cap. 1945-47 used the "nipple" cap.

Actually the change came mid 1949 (July I believe) when the switch from big logo to smaller logo occured on the deluxe editions. Prior to 1949 and on all standard editions the "nipple" caps were standard issue.

Your statement contradicts itself. If 1949-earlier cars used the nipple caps. And then Mid 49-later used the small logo caps, when were the large logo caps used?
1948 was the only year that the large logo caps were used. KDF cars (1943-45) used a different cap, if they had a cap at all.

Start of 49 to mid 49 used large logo caps.

hey guys, sorry to jump in, but I have 4 hub caps I'm trying to find out what they go to. Not even sure if their VW. I got them free here in the Samba, but the previous owner doesn't know what they are for. They look just like the "dome" caps without the VW logo (is this what you call nipple caps?) except just a tad larger. Also, there' no bend/lip edge, just a roll or metal at the edge. Perhaps type 2 caps?

Domed caps with no logo were used on early 356 Porsche vehicles.

Perhaps, but didn't the Porshe's have the same rims? These caps won't fit on my '65 beetle rims, unless I bend the tabs outward.

Type 1 & Type 2 caps are the exact same. A Porsche 356 wheel is not the same as a Beetle. Porsche wheels have 10 slots in the hub to aid in brake cooling. Here's a pic of a nipple cap:

On a side note, I'm looking for a set (repro or orig) of these 1945-47 Nipple caps, so if anyone has a lead, please let me know.

Thanks for the eBay link, but after reading that seller's feedback, I'd rather look elsewhere.

Hello. When in mid 49 did they stop using large logo hub caps on standard VW s?

According to JT Garwood - at ch 1-0106636, June 1949 small VW EMBLEMS WERE STAMPED INTO THE HUBCAPS... Deluxe were chrome and standard caps were painted... the center VW were painted black, on all models.

Note: No logo on hubcap design on 1938 KDF WAGEN... like "baby moons"

Early 1945 VWs had no hubcaps. A few later '45s had older nipple style hubcaps, with the KDF logo impressed in them... still later ones used smooth nipple caps with no logo or caps with a modified VW EMBLEM without the teeth embossed around it. Hubcaps were painted the body color . January 1946 saw a slightly revised nipple hubcap... and some were chrome plated.

In 1947, Another hubcap design appeared using a very large VW symbol in the cap center.... so, it appears the large logo cap was used in 1947 to June 1949.

... not gunna argue, but according to Garwood, large logo caps were used from '47 to June of '49...
... now RARE AIR is one of our guru masters, also... is a bit of contradictory info here. Since I don't KNOW the true start date. i'll leave that for others to hash out.

There where also these "flying swastika" ones seen on the early KDF cars.

And I want to note that the first small logo caps when introduced in 1949 had only single holes in their outside edge and not double holes as seen later.
