Sometimes the answer to the question is knowing where to look for the answer to the question. Below are some of the Info links I have found handy as I work on my 181. Please feel free to add to this list. I have purposely left out Thing owner showcases- if you have a website devoted to your Thing, post it in the "pics" sticky.
If you have a website devoted to your thing, keep it to yourself.

I have also not included commercial sites: support those who support The Samba.

I just got a catalog from JBugs and they have a ton of stuff for the Thing.

You can find them at www.jbugs.com... The only annoying thing is that their online catalog isn't so great recognizing part numbers, so some of the parts (like complete wiring harness) aren't found when you look them up online.

But they get the catalog out fast! I got mine within 3 days of requesting it.

Technical knowledge sources for repairs. I recommend an aircooled Thing owner pick up:

John Muir's How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive for the Compleat Idiot book http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1566913101/qid=11...p;n=283155
Bentley's official VW service manual http://product.half.ebay.com/Volkswagen-Official-S...4QQtgZinfo
The Rocky Mountain Thing Owner's Club CD http://home.att.net/~stswest/ROMTOC.html
Bug Me videos http://www.bugmevideo.com/

Above picture courtesy of Captain Spalding

All very useful resources for technical information.

The Type 181 Registry: http://www.type181registry.com/

I have some problem with this page, it's not the usual one, it's now a page about "The Campbell's of Washington" :?

This is sorely in need of updating:
bljones wrote: VW 181 Facts and Figures- aka "Hanno Spoelstra's Site": http://www.geocities.com/vwtyp181/ :( Dead (Geocities is gone)

bljones wrote: The Thing Organization: http://www.thething.org/ :( Dead

bljones wrote: The Type 181 Registry: http://www.type181registry.com/ :? Not dead, but hasn't been updated in a long long time.

bljones wrote: The Thing Ring: http://e.webring.com/webring?ring=thing;list :? No longer seems to be Thing specific.

bljones wrote: Brochure Scans: http://www.cassidy-online.com/thing73/info/ads.html
Period Magazine Article Scans: http://www.cassidy-online.com/thing73/info/reviews.html :D Still there, still helpful!

bljones wrote: PJ Macua's EuroThing Site: http://www.geocities.com/pj1macua/home1us.html :( Dead and gone with Geocities

bljones wrote: The VeeWiki: http://www.eppx.com/veewiki/ :( Dead. This was a very old address, but VeeWiki is gone anyway.

bljones wrote: Wiring Diagram: http://www.vintagebus.com/wiring/thing.gif :? Still there, but the Samba's own wiring diagram links (courtesy of Capt. Spalding!) are far superior.
