Hey. I know Bays are considered type 2, but I've heard engines in Bays can be either type 2 or type 4. How does one know? Is it the size of engine? Thanks...just on my continuous quest to become edumacated. |

The engines are referred to as type 1 or type 4. Type 1 is a beetle style engine which came in years up to 71. 72 and after have a type 4 (or type IV) engine. All of these were available in a type 2 vehicle (bus).
Hope this helps. |

I remember back when the 411 came out [that is where the type IV engine comes from, NOT the later Porsche 914] that the engine was called 'suitcase'.
Bugs [type 1] were uprights.
Squarebacks/fastbacks [type 3] were pancakes.
411/412 [type 4] were suitcases. |

The Haynes book still refers to the dual carb engine as a suitcase. |

type I engines are 1100-1600cc in most cases and the pancake, type IV, suitcase began life as a 1700, then 1800, and a 2000 until '79. After that is the vanagon years to which I am unfamiliar.
Your '78 has a pancakse engine in it, but I'd consider selling it to me- where it can have a long life free from all dropped valves that could potentially come it's way. :P |

I thought the 411 came out in '69 same as the 914???
side note: Porsche did a bunch of R&D on the type 4 motor helping VW solve alot of the type one design issues. |

"the 914 was considered to be a Volkswagen in Europe,"
from here: http://members.rennlist.com/914_canam/914GT.htm
And from here: http://www.german-sportscars.com/914.htm
"The 914/4 used a fuel-injected 1.7 liter "pancake" four-cylinder engine derived from that used in the VW 411."
And from here: http://vista.pca.org/stl/914.htm
The 914 was introduced in Sept 1969 as a 1970 model.
The 411 was produced from the summer of 1968..... a full year before the 914 appeared. http://www.type4.org/
So it seems that the type 3 engine is the suitcase engine and the type 4 is the pancake engine. |

Ok, I couldn't remember when the 411 was introduced. I know the 914 history quite well.
Still trying to muddle thru my copy of Das Grosse VW-Porsche Buch.

I'm looking at the weekend of June 2nd or June 9th. I'll keep you posted as plans develop. I'll pick a date soon and post the details. Should be great! Camping, cabins available for non-camping VW enthusiasts, rafting, fly fishing, great food, music, BEER, swap meet, etc. This Samba gang will be the first to hear! Hope you can make it Chris! |
