I want to place a wanted ad in the classifieds for an wooden fuel dip stick.
I cannot find any photos of one in the gallery and I thought the ad would get more attention if I had a photo of one attached.
Can one of you oval bro's take a pic of yours and post it for me please?
(Better yet, sell it to me :D )
Thanks

there is a real bakalite one in there now, make your search for " bakalite fuel measuring stick" it is more of the real deal than those wood square repops

Thanks, I'll search for it. As I recall though, the one that came with my 62 many years ago in '76 was wooden and it was the real thing, not repop.

Hello, I hope this helps you some. This particular one came out of a 54, if that helps.

The lettering on the bottom says "THE AMAZING VOLKSWAGEN". It's hard to read as the stick is pretty dirty, even after trying to clean it. Anyways I hope these pics are useful.

Beautiful!
Thanks Alan

You're very welcome!

Hey, one other thing, about how much do these animals go for these days?

AlanInMass54 Fri Sep 09, 2005 6:25 pm

I'm really not sure what they go for. This one was in one of my previous cars in a pile of rusty crap and mouse nests...

I haven't seen one of those in years!

I'm pretty sure that dipstick in Alan's pic is from a Canadian car. Notice how it is in Imperial gallons? The highest graduated mark is 9 gallons since a Beetle tank is 8.8 imp gallons.

Riff Raff Sat Sep 10, 2005 11:20 am

Yeah, that makes sense. My 62 was Canadian (as am I) I had never heard of the Bakelite sticks, only the wooden ones (graduated in Imperial gallons of course). That's just another one of those subtle differences between the Canadian and US exports.
I am fairly sure that my 56 would have come with one, but it looks like it may be a bigger job to scare one up than I first anticipated

I saw one on ebay that was blue. Don't remember if the auction ended yet.

I bought one like Alan's at the last Norwalk show. I think I paid $30.00. But I know that was cheap.

I've seen a number of them for sale over the years. I'd expect to pay $60-$100 for one. Less than $60 I'd consider a deal.

OLD thread, but folks asked me to post pics of my fuel dip stick, so might as well post them in the existing thread.

If there is enough interest, I will consider making repros. don't know the cost etc yet though, or if I will actually make more than one for myself (to save my original) :)

I know a lot of people at this year's Seattle show were VERY interested in my stick. I don't know how old it is.

Mark A. in S. CA used to make repros of these years ago.

I have one somewhere.

I don't think he does anymore but I sent him a link to this thread.

Update - he no longer produces them.

That is beautiful and utilitarian. Very VW. Would like to come by a repro. Please keep us posted

If someone can measure the spacing from the bottom to the top then people can make their own. I want to make one for my 54 and my early buses. I use just a plain bamboo stick to check fuel height in the double cab right now.
