There's a clicking/rattling kind of noise coming outta front left. It's kinda like when you have a nail or a stone in your tire, it clicks with every wheel revolution, faster you go, faster it clicks. What is it? The wheel bearings have been repacked recently when I did the breaks. Presuming that I shouldn't wait for it to become worse.
I'm not super experienced mechanic but I learn fast..... :D
Thanks folks. |

Re: Front wheel clicking/rattling noise - CV's?

OK, Since you repacked the bearings you probaly don't have a syncro. Since not a syncro you have no cvs on the front.
Jack the van up and rotate wheel by hand. It may click but may not if it only clicks when weighted. Grab the wheel at 12 and 6 oclock and gently try to wiggle it alond that plane. Grab it as well at 3 and 6 and do same thing. If it is loose all way round then bearing. If it were only loose at 3 and 6 that is probaly just worn steering components. After you regreased you just fingered tightened the axle stub nut right? I dunno about speedo troubleshooting. |

Here's an interesting way to check the cv's...
wait until late at night ( when it's quiet ) and drive to a parking lot.
Roll down the window and listen as you make a slow turns with the wheel at full lock. Do the same in reverse. |

Thanks Tram and Walrus. No it's not a Syncro, it's an '88 GL. The noise is actually coming from passanger side not "left" as I previously stated  .
I'll try what you suggested.
If it was a speedo cable wouldn't the speedo needle be jumping eratically? It's as smooth as butter. |

If th enoise is coming from the pasenger's side, I would think the wheel bearings have too much play. |

Also bear in mind that sound travels and can do weird things . Don't discount drive shafts at the rear . |

Thanks guys! :D
I know I said that the speedo needle is buttery smooth BUT after checking again tonight, at lower speeds the needle jumps in rhythm with clicking noise! When going faster it's smooth. It looks like Tram was on the right track... what now? New cable, or would lubing the old one be sufficient? I guess I should open Bentley and stop asking silly questions
At least I'm relieved that it's not something more serious...... I hope. |

It could also be the black box above the spare tire that the upper and lower speedo cables screw into. It has a big electrical plug on it, and a reset button for the O2 light. Try lubing both cables first. |

Have we decided which side speedo cable is on? I thought I heard it was on the left. |

Make sure the end of the speedo cable still has the little "e" clip that holds it into the dust cover for the hub. The square end of the speedo cable will catch and slip out of this hole if it is not clipped in, and cause the condition you describe. |
