There is some more in depth discussion of the helicopter bus on page two of this thread... https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...p;start=20 |

It's a Chev/GMC, and they were available with that extra long wheel base from the factory. Here's the window version:

2nd gen Chevy/GMC van, 67-70. The awkward looking lengthening was factory, believe it or not. |

Haha, that's one ugly SoB. Finster, did you see it in person, or also just found a photo of it? I wonder how the single wheel in front ties in with the central VW tunnel... Some clever construction work, using the outer sides of the roof as the front filler panels, and the early Beetle entire headlamp buckets to house the lamp assemblies. Is the rear single wheel rigidly attached to the body but with vertical suspension, or is that rear "carrier" fastened to the main body with a trailer hitch? I see a sturdy metal bar coming up and rearwards from the rear bumper hole in the fender, supporting a "rigid" rear section possibility.
How would something homebuilt like this be registered in the UK? Since the base vehicle is obviously a 4-wheeled Beetle, can it now be registered/considered a "motorcycle" with 3 main wheels?
Are those British early 1950's Ford Anglia wheels, which have nearly identical bolt pattern to VW's "wide 5s"? |

just found the photos. it's hard to work out what's going on engine/chassis wise. the rear wheel looks to be steerable and on a single arm like a goliath  yes those wheels are probably ford wide fives. the car is on the dvla records as a vw 1200 which is stretching the law and wouldn't stand much scrutiny if stopped by the police or if making an insurance claim. |
