you don't have to buy it...it is real...my current 68 sedan has "been there done that".....i bought it with a crispy rear end....the previous owner mounted a brandy new plastic cheapo filter to replace the one in it....he made it less than five miles before the NEW filter ruptured and set the rear of the car ablaze...the decklid still looks "nice" with most of the paint burned off...(many layers).... I haven't mounted a filter in the engine compartment in many years....i did mount a used 34PICT3 carb to my 68 that came from a car that had that nifty plastic filter mounted between the carb and pump....(i didn't put one there) but the nipple came out...luckily in my driveway and i saw the vapor fly.... so "buy it" or not the danger is REAL...this is just one of many vw's i have owned....i have had two plastic filters of my own leak in the engine compartment over the years...not a rupture, but a leak....i personally have never lost a vw to fire, and will do what i can to insure that i don't.... i don't put filters in the engine compartment and i take Bob Hoover's advise on making a passthru for the metal fuel line at the front plate....to each his/her own...

I have had good luck finding original VW-stamped fuel pumps at shows.

Before christmas I had a original re-builable pump given to me when mine on my rail craped out. I thouhgt buddy up the street might have an extra pump kickin around cuz he has a buggy to. He gave me the one he had not knowing if it would work at all. Turns out it was cavved as well so i had to buy one from lordco.... cost me like $56 bucks and that was after a %40 discount. :shock:

Just wondering now, where can i get a kit to rebuild these older rebuildable fuel pumps? :vw:

One of my local experts told me Super Beetles use different front bumpers than standard beetles and noone reproduced them. Lucky for me, he had an original super front bumper that he was willing to sacrifice for $250. He still has that bumper.

Actually buddy, you reversed the flow in the cooling system... thermostat wasn't diggin it... :oops: :shock: :roll:

Local shop owner here in town who has been in business for 30+ years started telling some of the local VW folk that he had just acquired a "barndoor" panel. A couple of us went to check it out and it turned out to be a "double door" 63 panel. Being the "know it all" that he is, he started to argue with us at first, but you should've seen the embarrassed/dejected look on his face when he finally came to realize he was dead wrong. I guess knowlege doesn't always come with lots of experience!

You can rebuild them. Wolfsburg West has the kits. Search under the forms about how to do it correctly. You need to pre-load the lower diaphram. I just rebuilt a OEM German 66-70 fuel pump and it worked for a wopping 5 miles before it quit pumping. I took it back a part and will be damned if I saw anything wrong with it. There are two "valves" on the top portion of the pump and the Bently says if they give you trouble then just "simply replace the top portion of the pump". Only problem is the are NLA (no longer available). I might try to rebuild it once more but if not then oh well. I only paid $5 bucks for it at a swap meet.
