I found this on a site, and thought this could be good for us offroad guys...

Quote: The source of our CV joints

If you’ve got plenty of money, you can buy new CV joints over the counter. They’re pretty expensive though. I pull all mine off cars at my local wrecker’s yard. The ones you want are 100mm OD, 39.5mm wide, with a 82.7mm PCD, and are found on a number of BMW cars.
Don’t confuse them with the 100 mm OD CVs from a VW Type2 (Bus) or Type 4. The width of the Volkswagen CVs are only 32mm and 34.20mm respectively and offer much less travel because of the restricted plunge. The much lauded Porsche 930 CV joint is 40mm wide, but is 108mm OD (the exact same size as some 5 and 7 Series BMW CV joints), and only offers one degree more angularity than our BMW 100mm OD CVs.

The reason you need 100 mm CVs is because they have to fit inside the 100mm bearings, both in the cassette and the rear uprights. So, all together, you will require four CV joints all together.

BMW: 1500, 1502, 1600, 1602, 1800, 1802, 2000, 2002, 316 (6.'75-8.'78 ), 318 (6.'75-8.'78 ), 320/4 (6.'75-8.'78 ), 320/6 (6.'75-8.'78 ), 320i (6.'75-8.'78 ), 323i (6.'75-8.'78 ), 518 (6.'72-9.'78 ), 520/4 (6.72-9.'78 ), 520/6 (6.'72-9.'78 ), 520i (6.'72-9.'78 )

Someone should try a set of these out and see how they work. The only problem I see would be having the output flanges made for the tranny, since I would think that would be a lot more expensive than having the stub axles made.

One another note, I've heard that the BMW 5-series CVs are the same as the 930's. Anyone know if this is true or not?

At 100mm, the outside size is right for bus flanges. Long as they bolt up and the inside splines are the same size and number (33), then they ought to work. Problem is, BMWs never end up in wrecking yards. They are too well engineered.

Good post, by the way. I'll start looking for a cheap one to check fitment and articulation.

It would be great if the bolt pattern was the same as the T2/T4 cv joints. I couldn't find any info on what the bolt pattern was, so I couldn't verify that, but I thought somebody might know. I guess a cheap way to find out would be to just take a stub axle to the junkyard and see if the patterns match up. That way all it would cost would be the time it takes to pull the axle from the car. If the pattern doesn't match, it would just be cheaper to buy the 930 parts instead of having custom stubs and output flanges made.

When I was at the pull-a-part yard a few days ago, I saw several BMW's, but I don't know if they were the ones from the list.

Well, I think you should go back and grab one, pull out your micrometer and get some measurements. My guess is our axles won't fit, (too many variables for unassociated companies). If someone came up with using 280Z U-joints back in the day, I'm sure someone looked at BMW CVs too (since these were older models). Then again...

There were some I tried to get, but the bolts were frozen up. I figured it would be better to try to find out if I could use them before I did all that work breaking the bolts loose.

Go pull em and check them as a public service; you could be doing a lot of us a favor, after all bmw's are just a little more common in the scrapyard than porches with any parts left

These CV's come "with a 82.7mm PCD" I cann't check what the bolltcircle diameter on the T2 is but this part must fitt. Maybe we can use the shafts from the BMW as well. If anyone goes to the Werckers maybe he can check the length as well.

I ve heard they drive with these CV's here in Europe too

this all sounds like a ton of work to save $200 on a full set of cv's if i where you i would be looking for a bus with type 4 cv's or some 930's just to save some of the guess work. i am also wondering if they will fit (just for prosparity) but there is a ton! of variables.

Busses had T2 CV's, not T4. Those were on Porsche 944/924/968's and Things.

I was just throwing it out there for someone else to look into. I have neither the time nor the money to experiment with them and see if they work or not.

this is an old post but I wondered if anyone figured anything out?
also, I'm assuming the numbers after the models are the years of those vehicles ?

Tom_Kathleen Sat Feb 05, 2022 1:37 pm

I have used new BMW CV's as a replacement for Porsche 930's. Work fine and much cheaper. Tom

Brian Mon Feb 07, 2022 1:24 pm

Tom, do you have any part numbers for the ones you've used?

Tom_Kathleen Mon Feb 07, 2022 3:16 pm

Here is a picture of the box that has the BMW CV joint that is the same as a Porsche 930 CV joint. The Pelican
https://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearch/PEL_s...ion=301174
price for the BMW part is $88.75 I coudn't find the Porsche 930 part to get that price. I was told about this subsitution by Kevin Zagar at Coolrydes. Tom

I called sloreilly's today and had them look for the 1970's bmw cv's for me that were listed in the original post and it was a no go. said they didn't even show a part number...
be nice to find a place to search cv's by size

that's great and all but the original post was about type 2 / bmw cv's and them having almost as much angle as 930's. anyone have experience with those?
