I'm looking at getting a CNC disk brake conversion but am not sure if I have long or short splines. How can I tell? My rail has an IRS bus transmission and the rest was built from a 67 beetle.

Short or long axles is a 67-68 swing axle thing. If you have irs trans..you need a set up for IRS.

There were a couple of years the swing axle had long splines. '67 & '68 I think or it was a type three thing. Anyhow, HotVW's did a complete review of it a couple of months ago. There is the whole "short axle short spline, long axle short spline, long axle long spline...
No telling what a buggy could have in it. I do know the long axle long spline swing axles were in demand for sand buggies for a while (long time ago...).

Measure the spline length of your old drum.
If it's around 2-1/2" it's a long spline.
Around two inches makes it a short spline.

I think there is some confusion. I jumped to the same conclusion above. I said..it was a 67-68 swing alxe thing. If I remember right the up to 66 had short and 67 & 68 had long. If you reread up top, he is running IRS...not swing.

The part that makes me think that this isnt the case with CNC brakes..is if you go to their website..every rear brake they make comes for either long or short splines. They make them all in 4 or 5 lug also. There is no mention of IRS or Swing axle. It is the same on the Jamar website.

I think Brad knows the answer...which I suspect is short for swing axle and long for IRS. I think if he sees this he will elaborate a little on it.

67 and 68 were long axle swing axles.
67 was long axle short splint
68 was long axle long spline
all late model euro cars with swing axle were long axle long spline
all type 1 IRS was long spline

Get this one right or you'll have stripped drum syndrome
