Hey All, I see a few frame kits from various sources that are 'knockdown kits'. Are the tubes bent and notched, or one or the other? I weld but I don't have a bender. My frame is awfull tired and I see Warrior kits for low $300's but I really wouldn't be able to much with just a box of tubes  |

Normally Knockdown kits contain all of the tubing necessary to complete a chassis just not welded together. |

I bought a warrior knock down kit for christmas. Haven't started on it yet because I'm finishing other projects to make room in the garage.
Basically, on the warrior, the floor of the frame comes tacked solid. It then has pre-bent and notched tubes that make up the remainder of the frame. It comes with pretty detailed instructions but basically you weld the torsion to the floor, clamp the beam in, and build the rest of the frame off of that. If you can weld, its an excellent deal. |

Just to add...the floor comes tack welded because you use it as a jig. If you start level and measure, check and measure you can get a perfectly square frame using the bottom of the frame. |

my dad is starting to collect parts to build a rail. I would also be interested in where you can get one of these. Any one know if there are any you could get a manx style body to fit on? |

Talk to luckyride, he is building a new Manx style car with full cage.I'm not sure who is building the actual cage but it is being bent and cut on some kind of super top secret laser guided CNC tube bender. |

i thought knockdown meant a kit that easily comes apart for easy shipping, i.e., in a flat box. could refer to other products besides vw buggies. everyone here has vw on the brain.... |

I bought mine from Fisher Buggies which is local. Their magazine ad says $329 but when I went to buy mine they said they were out and had to re-order but they would be $419. This was in December, and their add STILL shows $319. I didn't argue too much because I know steel and fuel has gone up a bunch and I would have to factor in shipping if I got it from somewhere else.
Check Larry's Off-Road. They had a pretty good price on that kit too.
I did quite a bit of research here and all over the net. Berrien had the most popular knock-down kit. When talking to the guy at Fisher's, he said the Berrien is built wide enough to fit Beard seats which I wanted, plus I'm 6-2 300 lbs so wider is better :D
The warrior knock down comes pretty complete. It comes with all of the tubing plus the shifter box and some other stuff. You can also get a bracing kit which braces the front end (above the foot wells) and the overhead bars and its cheap. They also sell cutting brake mounts for like $10, truck conversions for the rear end, all kinds of stuff. |

If anyone is interested I am a Berrien dealer and will have a few in stock by march 20th, it looks like everyone described the kits pretty good. I am selling the knock down kits at $300 for the warrior two seater and the cruiser four seater knock down model for $475, plus shipping, packaging, and tax but if you come pick them up from me that is the price. I am located in Webster City IA 50595 and if you need a quote on shipping just let me know, I also will have a few other tack chassis coming in with that order I can fully weld the chassis if you like and do have some torsions to use and also some link pin and ball joint front axles. we are a full line fab shop and also offer TIG welding, painting, powder coating we build custom carriers to fit in the back of pickups for hauling rails. we sell anything from knock down kits to turn key rails and Fiberglass buggies. We will even take your old chassis in on trade if it is in decent shape or strip all your parts off your old chassis and put them on a new one for you. our website is under constuction and there isn't alot on there right know but it will be done soon. Feel free to e-mail with any questions. |

Hey Daniel,

I'm in Dora (Between B'ham and Jasper), so we are aren't too far from each other. If you would be willing to drive to Tuscaloosa, Mitchell's VW is a Berrien Dealer. Their number is 205-752-0962 if you want to give them a call. I think I paid about $300 for my kit a few years ago, which isn't too bad. He also might have a few welded frames in stock, too.

That's seems pretty amazing that you can get a bent and notched frame for $300. Even if steel has gone up and they are $400 now, that still sounds like a deal. Time to start looking for an IRS donor.... :P |
