View original topic: Bosch AL82 Alternator in a 912?

My father's a mechanic and is working on a customer's 1969 912.
The customer is wanting to convert to an alternator, so my father calls and asks me if the Bosch AL82 as supplied to 70s Type 1 VWs is a bolt-in.
I see at http://www.emorymotorsports.com/vintage/parts.htm they offer a kit (bloody expensive, too, compared to VW parts), so I know they're using the same alternator, but does anyone have experience in knowing if the VW pedestal and backing plate will complete the install, or is it necessary to get the Porsche-specific items?

The backing plate is the same but the pedestal is different. I dont know why it would cost $800. Their was a guy making alts out of old gen bodies. Let me see if I can find his website.

I spoke to the guy at electrotech and he said that the inside diameter of the gen must be at least 4.25" . I dont know what the ID of a 912 gen is but have your father look at it.
