View original topic: 73 Bus Dual Carb to Single (2 Barrel)

Hey I jsut baught a 73 Westflia with the stock dual Solex setup. I have had 2 buses with this setup in the past and it is always a hassle.

I am thinking about changing to a single Weber Progressive. I installed one on by 74 Bug and it runs great.

Is it an easy conversion in this case? I think I can get to everything without removing the engine.

Is there a better single carb solution for this application (everyday driver)?

No. The Weber Progressive cannot be preheated, so you will have driveability issues.

The dual carbs only present problems if they are not assembled, set up and adjusted properly. Just learn the particulars, get a synchronising tool, trust me it is better to go this route than the one you are contemplating. A beetle engine and a type IV engine are quite different in this case.

I agree with Boomer. Weber Progressives on Types 3 and 2/4 should be stamped out. It's a terrible option. The duals that were factory are far superior.

Yes you want to stay with the dual carbs. As stated above, the centermounted ones ice up and there really is no way around it. I would make sure that I really understood what there is to know about adjusting the dual carbs. When they work really well, it is very nice.

Quite helpful.

Ditto most of the above.

That said, if you're missing several pieces or really have your mind made up to pull the stock dual Solexes, put a pair of 34ICTs or Kadrons on instead of the progressive. They don't cost *that* much more than the progressive kit and work a lot better.

Bus progressive kit: $400 (busdepot)
Bus Kadron kit: $480 (cip1, couldn't find it listed at busdepot)
Bus 34ICT kit: $430 (busdepot)

These cb 34mm are great as well and have chokes and are only $369.95.

What is a good dual carb setup for a 70 bus with a stock 1600 upright in it? Will it help or hinder things? I also was thinking about not doing it because I would not be able to run the stock oil bath any longer right?

Thanks,

~Josh

If you promise yourself to slow down and enjoy the gentle meanderings of a stock VW bus, the oem oil bath air cleaner will help your engine last longer.

Any suggestions on a good carb sync tool? Stock Solex duals.
