As promised:
You can use a Hella regulator / brush set from a BMW in your Vanagon:
Hella 5 DR 004 241-121
BMW 12 31 1 726 022
Cost was $17.95 at Inter Auto in San Diego. Works fine.... |

Walt,
Thanks for the info. I couldn't wait so I brought a Bosch from my local auto store. Their price was 39.99 plus tax.

Buy a spare! At that price anyone can afford and extra one. Sorry for the delay, I just saw the old box today. |

r39, that's for the 90 AMP wasserboxer alternator? I was thinking of replacing Winston's on general principles, and $18 sounds a lot better than $44! Just want to be sure it's the right brush/regulator set.
Thank you, and
Best! |

YEP. It seems all mid 80s VWs up to the early 90s had the same basic 90A alternator. I have used several of these regulators. Work fine, last a long time. |

That I'm finding a lot of German-made K.A.E. voltage regulators for '84 Vanagon's for around $20. Anybody have any experience with these?
Otherwise, I'm finding Boschs and equivalents to the Hellas--but, online--no Hellas!

Maybe not on line. But, I bet the FLAPs have them. I got mine via a FLAPs called Inter Auto Parts. They have a web site but it is nothing much. You tried the BMW parts places? It is really marked for a BMW. See part numbers above.
Never heard of KAE. Made in India????? |

Every place that's shown a picture of one (so I can tell it's a K.A.E.) claims that they're 'Germany' and 'O.E.M.'
I'll check at Pep Boys and Checker, Napa's not carrying that one, as far as I can tell. I very much appreciate your passing the information along!
