I have read several posts about people looking for a bike rack for the front of their bus and I had assumed that doing this was no big deal.
There was a picture on here of somebody pouring beer through themselves with the edge of a bike rack visible
I have a Rhode Gear rack for placing on the back of a car and I had planned to try mounting it on the front of my bus.
Everything was going great and it was fitting fine and then my wife asks "won't the bikes block the headlights?"
So what about it? Do people with racks on the front of there bus only travel in the daylight? Do they have trouble seeing if they travel at night?
Has anybody else tried mounting the Rhode Gear type rack? http://www.epinions.com/auto-Rack_Systems-All-Rhode_Gear_Pro_Super_Shuttle_SU3003 I put the bottom curved bar on the bumper and the top bar against the bottom of the windshield and tightened the straps until the rack was hard against everything including points on the spare tire, I can shake the bus with it.
I called one place that said anytime a bicycle or its rack interferes with any light you are breaking the law. |

this is why you see them on the roof so often. there is usually sufficient headroom under highway bridges that this isnt a concern, though it is a giant sail and youll be picking bugs off your handlegrips. I remove the fenders and wheels from mine, and store it on my rack horizontally with the wheels inside. |

I have a 2" receiver on the front of my '78 that would accept a bike rack, or a host of other things.
As for blocking the headlights, I think that if they can shine through the spokes it would be fine, but if the beam is blocked more than that, you would have a problem. But legally, I expect that this varies from state to state. |

looks like the Thule Spare Me
and yes I'd rather it block my headlights a bit than my tailights. |

You can mount a rack on the rear higher and not block the tail lights.
I would also not want to hang bikes on a front spare with only 6-8 sheet metal screws(most likely) holding it on. Even if nut and bolted it would still stress the heck out of the nose. |

Can’t speak for the Baywindow, but like John I have a 2” hitch receiver welded under my front bumper of my 1987 Westy. Put my mountain bike on there for months. It blocks the driver headlamp a bit, but not enough to cause concern.
Having it on the rear is a PITA because I use the back hatch quite often. A bike back there would always be a hassle. |
