Hello Team,
Quick question as per the heading -
Use of the vacuum advance with Judson Superchargers?
My Zwitter has a stock 25hp motor, but is running a later 28pci carb and matching VJU 4 BR 8 distributor with the vacuum advance fitted.
I read somewhere many years ago about disconnecting the vacuum advance as when connected there is too much advance to suit the now increased cylinder fuel/air charge, and note the sales advert photo for Judson from back in the day shows the vacuum line removed....
Does anyone have any experience running their Judson'd car on modern fuels they'd like to share before I start the installation of this Judson...??
Kindest Regards,
Ken.

Cant see the oil line connected either :D Never heard of that one before. Run the vac line or better still buy an 010. |

As "vwhelmot" says the Vacuum line and Oiler lines are omitted from the picture. It's simply a clean illustration of the Supercharger and Throttle linkage. |

Many many thanks VWhelmot and John,
I have just received a copy of the original Judson fitting instructions very kindly supplied by George Folchi which contains the wording "Refit the vacuum line by bending it to suit" which therefore answers the question.
I have the car booked for a dyno run next week before I fit the Judson. The laugh was that the company had to check the dyno would read as low as 25hp!!!
A bit of fun if nothing else!
Kindest Regards,
Ken.

I've seen Judson engines match to VJU4BR8/VJ4BR8/VJ4BR25/019/010 and even a 40hp Big Cap.
The VJ4BR25/010 are the most used. |

The mechanical weights advance on a VJU 4 BR 8 are identical to the VJ 4 BR 8 mechanical distributor which is identical to an "019" distributor. So essentially running a 36 hp Beetle distributor without the vacuum advance connected is the same as running an 019.
If you are going for the total correct vintage look you will want the older badge not an 019 since they didn't appear with that badge until the mid 1960's. |
