I have noticed a few dealer brochures showing early barndoors with pinstripes similar to those on palm green/ sand green 55-57 buses.

What's the deal with those? Were they an option? Were they only on the promo buses? Which models had them?

Any info much appreciated

ALL Standards and Kombis for sure had them! Most likely panel's as well, what year they started...not sure on that one ,but 54/55's for sure had them.
My guess is that all years had them. My friend Drews nice Original Standard(jan. 51) has them.

you only see them on Original paint busses, and lets face it,there are not many left like that

Ploon, my main man! Is this Vincent's bus? The BELTEC one? Did you do the pin stripping. Cuz you are the original VON DUTCH!!!!

You should come with the Dutch posse in June.

that's indeed vincence ride (the beltec machine)
pinstriping was done by mr empire32, his striping is a few notches better then mine.

i'm trying to talk some of my dutch/uk friends in going to the states in the autumn or next spring (doing the vw classic trip is a bit played out ;-) not sure which show we want to visit on that trip. maybe an octo show and pomona, but i ain't sure if they are on/near the same dates.

The paint is mostly gone on my June '53 standard, but if you look towards the rear of the bus you can see the pinstripes in this pic. There was a pinstripe of the lower colour on the upper, and one of the upper on the lower.

The VW Classic weekend is the best time to come over. Though the Classic isn't what it used to be. The OCTO show is the shit, followed by the BDM BBQ. But it's your call. The weather is allot better, but considering Dutch weather, It's good weather here.

April is good too. The BUG IN and Kelly Park. Send me an e-mail and I will help you guys sort it out.

Kombis and standards up to '58 got pinstripes. The panels & trucks never had them, and the deluxes had aluminum trim instead.

The only exception I've seen is on the green/green Westfalias, they came without pinstripes.

I'm sure there are other exceptions as well....

Thanks for the info guys.

I seem to only have ever noticed palm reen/ sand green buses with stripes, I wonder why that is?

Did barndoor buses have a different stripe colour system to that of later buses? From what I can see from the brochure pics that grey/ grey bus has a black stripe on the top colour and the top colour as a stripe on the bottom colour. All the green/ green buses I've seen have the top colour on the bottom and bottom colour on the top. Is this right?

Any more pics of barndoors with stripes much appreciated.

You can just make out the original pinstriping.........

I checked out an original paint '51 and the upper stripe is blue.

Is it normal for the forward pop out to open backwards on a b/d, or is that a previous owners mod?

Hey Ronnie....I've never seen another barndoor like that.....we think it was a special order because of the ambulance vent.
There's only one popout on the passenger side....which is equally as weird to me.
No signs of any modification and the paint & headliner is still original.

What colour(s) was that bus?

It seems that on Clara's bus the top stripe is either white or bottom colour. Is there any logic to the colours of the stripes on barndoors?

That is odd, I never noticed it before.

Bricky, you need to speak to Professor Lind-O-Calrisian of the Institute of Modern Westies. He can research the archives and get you an answer! Or you can ask Dr. Gibbs Patrick Connors of the Metropolitan Barndoor Foundation as well.

Oh, keep an eye out for a BD bulk head for my panel aye!

Hi,

When i was working on my 51 panel , i found pinstripes on but never think that they could be originals but .....

There 's few minutes i read this post , I still have the doors and the pics have 2mn
This original dove blue panel was cover with green and white colors.
I never found pinstripes on the front clip , this one was a 55-58 (changed after a crasch)

pinstripes were white-grey.
