I'm trying to source the correct sheet metal needed to repair the body on my baja'd 54 (I bought it that way :( ). I'm finding a lot of good information on the forum regarding the front and rear clips, but not much on the luggage tray area.
My question how much variation is there in the luggage trays sections (firewall and bottom) for all ovals? I've read that some had the luggage rail mounts 54 and older I believe, but other than that is the sheet metal the same?
There are some sections in the classifieds, but just want to make sure I get the correct replacement.
Thanks! |

Hello vdub8.
There is a big difference between a early Oval and a late Oval luggage tray. I had to replace my luggage tray on the Baja'd 54 (Also bought it that way :( ) I restored. In a early Oval (True 55 and down) the luggage tray is shaped difference where it drops down towards the pan. Almost transitions from Horizontal to Vertical. Where on a 56+ Oval the transition is more of a sloping drop down to the pan (like a slide)
Here's a picture of a 56+ luggage tray that I found. Notice the differant shape.

That is very helpful...and great pictures to illustrate the difference...Thanks!
My package tray had aluminum reinforcement across the inner firewall similar to yours. Looks like swiss cheese with all the holes they put in it. The bottom has rust damage, so I'll be replacing the whole section as you did.
Now that know exactly what I'm looking for the trick is to find one in good shape. |
