If you use Matson in the Pacific to ship to Hawaii, they ship on deck (covered) and put the vehicle through a (tough) parking brake test. They set the brake ---start the car/bus and try to move it 1st gear. If it moves they will reject it. My single cab was left at a tow yard by CarOnATruck because of this requirement. It cost $350 in towing and repair to get it on the boat! Also you need to have less than 1/4 tank of gas.

and they were cheap and communicated very well with me.

They got these people to do the shipping so I guess they are the actual company.
and their driver called me almost everyday.
Answered his phone every time I called him.

Any one have any experience (positive or negative) in shipping a bus to the UK ? Who did you use ? How much ? What did they require ? Was it put in a container ?

There's no shortage of people on the Samba who have experience of shipping from the US to the UK. Bus, Bug, Karmann Ghia they're much the same when it comes to shipping.

The lesson I learned was shop around for a quote. There's so much variation on price and routing you just have to keep searching until you have what you want.

Most agents will quote you for sharing a container. This is good because it keeps the price down...not only on the cost of the container but on the dock handling charges when it gets to the other side.

Don't be tempted to get a quote from a UK company, some are very good but it will always cost more than a US Company.

The handling fees etc when you get to the UK vary slightly from port to port but mine was for Southampton. This is how they broke down on the import of my '58 Karmann Ghia:
Quote: Container service charge / line admin 135.00 50% share 67.50
LOLO fee for merchant haulage 50.00 50% share 25.00
Government security fee 10.50 50% share 5.25
Bond fee 25.00 50% share 12.50
Container shunts to & from warehouse 135.00 50% share 67.50
Unload vehicle 65.00
Import customs clearance 60.00
Outlay of taxes if required (depending on value) 20.00
Mail out title cert in registered post 5.00
Agency / arrangements 55.00

TOTAL EXCLUDING TAXES; 382.75

Where it says "50% share" it refers to your part of a shared container.

So for the total you have to add in the charge of the shipping paid to the US shipper. $1200 in my case from Oakland CA plus import duty of 50.

Now comes the grand UK rip-off...VAT. The VAT is charged at 17.5% on all of those fore mentioned charges plus what you paid for your VW and that's the lot.

Hope it helps. To be honest it's not that bad really...everyone pays VAT on everything anyway and shipping's no exception.

I ship a LOT of cars around the world.

For US Shipping I recommend http://www.caronatruck.com (Let em know Randy from Oldbug.com sent you )

If you need enclosed transport...tell em that up front.

For International Shipping try http://www.calship.com

Able Cargo in Los Angeles (Carson I think) seems to be a name that comes up a lot as a drop off point for International buyers. Most of the high end stuff seems to go through them.

Randy,
Did you yourself import the Country Buggy Oldbug restored a few years back, or did someone else import the vehicle?
If you imported it yourself:
1. Who did you use to import the car from Oz?
2. Were there any special or unusual problems you encountered importing from Oz?
3. How long was the vehicle in transit?
4. What were your costs to get it to your shop from Australia? (ball park figure)
5. Is there anything, in hindsight, you would have done differently to smooth out the process?
6. Did any Aussie VW enthusiasts (perhaps Bill Moore) assist you in arranging the details, or did you do everything relating to getting the vehicle here yourself?
7. Can you offer any other advice about vehicles specifically being imported from Oz?

I had an incredibly smooth experience shipping a Porsche 356 to Iceland using ICE Global Logistics. They even act as your payment agent and take care of the funds transfer. They're very efficient, and I was extremely impressed.

Everything between seller and buyer is done by Mail and FAX once payment for vehicle made?
I believe this is for CA to NY. I'm the seller in CA. Do I /can I keep the plates? Does the buyer apply for temp Plates/tags befoer receiving vehicle?
If I need to take the car a distance for the buyer to their shipping company I would guess I should charge for that...gas and time plus getting back home.
I have read a great deal on the subject but not seen answers on how to deal with these situations.
I appreciate your experienced feedback.

You should keep the plates if CA requires you to turn in the plates when cars are sold. Or if you simply want to keep them. I usually keep any plates.

The buyer needs to get temporary tags if they are required in his/her state to drive the car home from the shipping destination.

If you are dropping the car off, you could charge for shipping port delivery, it's up to you. I have not done this myself when it was local but most cars I have sold were picked up directly from my house.

Anyone have any good experiences with NON-RUNNING autos? I have to ship 2 of them from Pennsylvania to Oregon.

I shipped a doka from Washington state to Pennsylvania by Kiwi Karriers 2 years ago. Things went well, but for some reason their website is down, doesn't leave me with a good feeling about future business.

Ive got two in Oregon coming to me in So Cal and Greg is going to haul them. Bu with the price of fuel, he doesnt want to run empty if he can help it.

So...if you have a car or two in Nor Cal that need to go to Oregon or if you have a car or two in So Cal that are going to Nor Cal...please let me know.

Lets join forces and save a buck or two and "Carpool" :lol:
