I was wondering if anyone might have the the June '97 issue of VWT. I need to get a copy of the article on installing a new ragtop cover. Working on building my son a '61 rag. Putting a new stayfast canvas covver on. I am sure I can figure it out, but a tip or two might help.
Thanks

Thanks

I have a '59 shop manual with instructions; it pretty straight forward. In addition to the cover, you need rivets to attach the cover to the front part and I'm still looking for a supplier of them. the rivets look like pop rivets but I think they are steel instead of aluminum (I still have the original roof on my bug and its time to replace it.) If you use aluminum rivets paint the holes to ensure that the aluminum dosent contact the front part of the frame to prevent electrolysis.
There is also webbing on each side that connects some of the cross members so that it slides closed evenly; the webbing I think is also riveted in but the rivets are bigger...

Issue 67 of Ultra VW (UK mag) has a write up on page 80 titled Golde Sunroof Install. "Neil Ellis fits a factory ragtop."
Its a two part article, to be continued in next months print, issue 68.

I did mine, a couple of times. The only tip I learned is to glue the UNDERside of each header bar. That way the bar can slide into the canvas easily. Good luck. |

I've never riveted them on, I use glue. Automotive Goop has worked pretty good for me. |
