Unbolt the carburetor and remove it.
You might want to get a spacer to put in there to compensate. Various places sell spacers, they are commonly used for alternator conversions.
You can also wedge it open or remove the guts so it's still installed but it's just a "pass-thru" and doesn't limit your top speed. |

Is the governor actually functioning now to limit your top speed? they can be adjusted, you know.
Sometimes there are other factors that limit speed. What does it do when you rev it up... does it get to a certain rpm and suddenly stop there no matter that the gas pedal goes farther down? There actually is good reason to not run at too high rpms... overheating and wear on the motor. What is your current top speed? I think a stock 66 would go 65mph at about 4K rpms. but that is assuming it is stock geared, stock size tires and in good running condition. |

Don't toss the manifold if you stick a Beetle one on there. The world is losing it's rare later type 2 only intake manifolds. |

What i've heard is they work only on the 1st three gears. I removed the plate inside on mine (uhoh I let out the secret). |

no, they are not connected to the gear shift or trans... they work in all 6 gears (including neutral) |

I took the butterfly valve off of mine and then used the spring from an old carb to put behind the little piston in there to keep it up against the stop so there wasn't a "hole" . |

I think thar derv is saying the governor is always affecting the engine...
First, second, third, fourth, neutral, and reverse = 6 |
