| I found a good fitting boot for the filler neck last week and finally got it installed today. The part had an intended life as an axle boot, but is easily modified to serve as a boot for the filler neck. All one has to do is trim one end to get a 1 3/4 inch hole to fit the filler neck, while the other end fits snuggly in the hole in the body without modification. The part number for the boot at NAPA is ARI 42-61080. As it is intended for continuous contact with grease, I would think that it could handle an occassional bit of petrol with little problem. |

What application (vehicle) did you use this for? I have several baywindow buses that I need rubber filler hose to connect the tank to the metal filler pipe. The other piece - at the filler opening on the body - is still available - from Bus Depot and others.
Thanks |

The boot I am talking about is just the dust boot around the filler neck at the gas cap so it should never see prolonged exposure. If you want the boots that join the filler pipe to the tank you can get fuel filler hose at NAPA for that purpose. On my 411 I used one long hose instead of the two short hoses and the intermediate pipe that the Type 4's came with and thus eliminated a couple of extra joints. IIRC it takes 1 7/8 inch hose to do this, but don't take my word for it, please measure before you buy, fuel filler hose is expensive.

This dust boot is for a Type 3 or Type 4 applications only, it does not apply to a bus. What you probably want for your busses is the filler pipe off of a later model bay. Starting around 1976+/- VW started using a filler pipe with an extra bend at the tank end, this extra bend eliminated the need for the dog leg filler hose that is no longer available. You could also have a filler pipe fabricated with the extra bend if you can not find one in a wrecking yard somewhere. Thinking about it I may have one around, PM me and I will look. |

| Here in the States a VW parts supplier named ISP West sells these on Ebay all the time. One is there right now for $38. Just do a search for "VW TYPE 3 GAS TANK FUEL FILLER NECK COLLAR GERMAN". I have used them on my 412s, and their Type 3 filler neck is a near perfect fit. |

Just saw this while searching for other stuff. Anyone know if it will work on a Type 4? Doesn't look anywhere near as deep.

| Nope...wont work. I have tried that one. I made a cast off of an old cracked one and made mine from pourable silicone. Long before I knew ISP existed. The one from ISP should work well. Ray |

I can measure when I get home as mine are laying on the workbench...but its the same as late type 3...so get a type 3 kit...which you will have to cut into three parts....or you can do as Wildthings noted years ago.....look for one of the same size (I think he noted 1" and 7/8" which sounds about right).....
.....and look for a hose of comparable size that is fuel filler hose at FLAPS....with a small bend in one end. There should be numerous that similar that you can trim to length. This gets rid of one metal bend and two clamps. Ray |

| Checking in.. did anyone have to replace the filler to tank hose? ('73 412 Wagon) If so, I'd appreciate the dimensions. Mine leaks and creates nasty fumes. Also, does this involve removing the front end? Thanks! |

If you order one for a type 3...like 1972-73.....it fits. I say that. ...but you will only use sections of it. The filler neck hose is in 3 sections. It has the top straight part clamped to maybe a 5" section of hose......clamped to about a 5" section of slightly curved metal tube....clamped to maybe a 3"" section of hose clamped to the tabk.
Can it be replaced without removing the tank....yes...but its tedious. You will have to have some 1/4" drive screwdeiver bits to reach the clamp on the tqnk and usually its so rust you pry it off.
I dont remove the tank unless I am refurbing the complete front suspension because it has to come out. Mine is out right now.
While you are at it......you may as well refurb the tank snd replace all the vent lines.
I am just about to go down next week to a flaps and look for some modern close to same size fuel filler hose....with a slight bend at the bottom.
I have a type 3 hose I bought but some others especially on the bus forum have found a great selection of filler hoses at FLAPS. Ray |
