View original topic: How much striping?

My paint job turned ugly. Mistakes and inexperience took their toll.

However I learned some things.

The color coats masking errors can't be clear coated, too ugly.

Questions, when I did the original paint job I stripped the metal to bare, acid etching primer, more primer, more primer, base coat, second color.

How far do I sand into this existing paint job. Can I reprime the base coats after they have been sanded smooth?

I would like to think that I could sand the existing base paint smooth. prime and start all over. Is there any reason to remove all the existing color coat?

Thanks

I’m not a professional painter anymore but in my experience, if the existing paint is adhering well, you only need to go over it with 600 grit so the new paint has something to hold onto. Personally, I would use guide coat powder while sanding. You’d be surprised how many little things you will find.
