1311 V.W. IRS Bus or Vanagan 4-Pinion $260.99

Actually, that looks like a wholesale price. Crash, you want to be a distributor?

Man, I hope that's not true!

I seem to remember that the Quaife runs $1200 alone...

any more information on this?

I want to see one of the pros here install it and give some testimonial.

Big Dave Thu Sep 21, 2006 1:36 pm

Well, that's my plan.

All except the "pro" part :D

Dave you already have a 091 in your bug right?

How much was that/How does it drive?

EXITSTRATEGY Thu Sep 21, 2006 1:52 pm

i want one. what's an 091?

and this is an air-cooled bus tranny right?

MadDog69 Thu Sep 21, 2006 2:23 pm

the Quaife is a limited slip dif witch is so much nicer than a locker, both street and off road. but you cant get an aftermarket limited slip for the 091. used factory 091 limited slips go for around $1200 if you can find one(some european and canadian buses came with the limited slip). I would like to find a worn or broken one and give it to my machinist friend to copy and manufacture!

wish someone made reversed ring and pinion for the 091 too. so when you run it mid engine you dont run on the coast side of the gears.

if your in the junk yard, always spin the tires on the old fat chicks and early 80"s models! if they spin in two different directions its a regular 091. if they spin in the same direction BUY IT RIGHT THERE! DONT LET IT OUT OF YOUR SIGHT!

With limited slip diffs you are sacrificing off-road-ability for street-ability. When you push them they slip like an open diff... but they do drive nice on the street. I had one in my truck for awhile.

I just got very lucky. I was at a swap meet in Ogden last fall, and this guy drove in with a pickup truck full of parts. As he was pulling a bunch of old fenders and stuff off the truck, i caught a glimse of a bus trans. All i saw was the square nose cone on it, but i knew what it was. I asked the guy how much for the bus trans, and he says "I dunno...10 bucks?" I said sold and couldn't get my wallet out fast enough. It was then that I pulled it out and saw it was an 091. All this was much to the chagrin of the guy that was selling a junkyard 002 3-rib trans for $350.
I had a local guy go through it just for my piece of mind, but it turns out everything was fine, except reverse was pretty chewed up, so he replaced it.
It drives fine, but the gearing would kinda tall with 31" tires on the street, but with my 2110, it cruises nicely at 70-75 MPH at 3K RPMs.
I guess the gearing in it is similiar to an IRS bug trans.

I've got 091 ZF limited slip diffs for sale for $900.

what vw's does an 091 trans fit?

Do you mean what vehicles they came in?
091s were in 76-79 transporters (i think) later years also had 091s, but they are a side shift and hard to adapt to a bug.

EXITSTRATEGY Mon Sep 25, 2006 11:47 am

so it's a "special" standard transporter trans? what's the designation for syncro? / &w/ diff-lock cause i wasn't sure if that's what you guy's were talking about or what. is it possible to replace the diff from an 091 into another trans? aren't the housings all about the same size? and what about those other aftermarket lockers/ lsd? how do they stack, and are they for 091's only? or are they to give 'normal' tranny's the capabilities of an 091?

what's the low-down Yo?

Bruce Mon Sep 25, 2006 1:12 pm

An 091 diff can be installed in any Bus IRS trans made from 1969 to the end of Vanagon production, including Syncros.
Although there does exist a 002 ZF, the 091 ZF can be fitted to any Bus 'box by using the 091 screw-in bearing supports and flanges. The Vanagon 094 side shift trans used the 091 ZF.

I wish I had the dough for that that zf bruce. I have an 091 and type 4 that im putting in my 66' thats my full off roader but will never see a trailer so the zf would rock for me.

hopefully I will get to that project soon after my 70 pseudo class 11 is finished next spring. and maybe by then the lottery gods will shine on me!
