So I was gonna to take out my girlfriends head unit in her '97 Jetta and put in my Eclipse. I couldn't get the head unit out. But I had unhooked the positive on the battery, and when we connected it back and started the car... it said SAFE. Now it's still stuck there, and she doesn't have the manual cause they got the car used. And no one remembers how to put in the code. Some help please???? please email me [email protected] thank you very much. |

you need to go to the dealer.. yo umight just end up putting a new stereo in. Its fairly simple to do, you dont even have to disconnect the positive. call crutchfield and get an installation kit for your make and model, and they will send you instructions on how to do it. remember also, eclpise stereos have the same feature sometimes... only theirs is a certain CD that you program to turn off the safety.. good luck... |

I just had a customers car in yesterday with that same problem, it was also a 97 Jetta. Usually the code is in your manual but some people remove it so a thief can't get to it. What you'll have to do is pull the radio out and copy down the serial number, model number and any other number you find. Then call a local VW Dealer give them all the info. and they will be able to give you the code. It is a four digit code. When you press power for the radio (safe mode) will appear then change to 1000. With the 1-4 preset buttons you enter the code. Then simply press the > button and you're all set.
Good luck,

I'm having a similar problem. I bought a VW stereo used at the local thrift store and have no code to get it out of safe mode. I called the dealer and they said it's too old and even if it was new enough, I'd need the registration, etc from the car it came from. I googled the serial number and it seems to be from a mid 90's VW. Any ideas how I might get the code? |

Oops. Just googled it again and it comes up as a 1999 VW stereo. New enough for them to check but still have no information about the car it came out of. |
