Some of you guys already know I lost a bunch of barndoor parts that were mistakenly sent to the scrap metal recycling place a few months back along with a bunch of other VW parts.
Parts that were lost in this included, BD front and rear seats, 2 BD decklids, 2 BD front bumpers (one with deluxe trim) 1 pressed rear bumper, complete ragtop mechanism, crankstart apron, window frames etc. Also lost a lot of later split bus interior, seats and rear bumpers plus a lot of early beetle fenders etc.
Now, this is not a mercy or pitty me thread. I will admit for 3 months I mourned my losses and Gibbs and Johhny can attest to that. I was ashamed to talk about it and ashamed to tell ANYONE what happened for months but heres why Im posting this thread, If anybody has a line on these parts atleast reasonable please let me know. I need to bounce back from this and get back to work on my bus.

That hurts, I am sheading a tear for those lost parts! I guess Gerson going to become your new best friend for parts or you trying to stay all O.g.

Skim Sat Sep 16, 2006 3:04 pm

Actually I had big plans on spending some cash with Gerson and this set those plans back a few notches.

Bryan67 Sat Sep 16, 2006 3:32 pm

Damn! And to think I was pissed when my Dad tossed out three complete bumpers i had for my 65 Panel.

EverettB Sat Sep 16, 2006 11:06 pm

Really? How the hell could that happen?

That has to be one of the worst losses I have ever heard of...

Talk about 2 steps forward 100 steps backward, maybe now is the time to sell the shell :?

*ouch*

your thoughts on cuba earlier this summer may be an eventual source of parts (after some footwork). here is a postcard from cuba found in the gallery:

there are probably a few folks thinking "hijinks" and waiting to see the finished product unveiled soon.

When I moved from Valley View to my house, there were some helpers hired by the owner of the house I was moving from load a bunch of scrap metal to haul off. These guys hauled the shit on the inside of the storage shed as well as the outside mainly judging what was good and what was bad by the condition of the parts, if it looked like junk it got tossed.
I was at my house when the trailer pulled up and I was like where is the other shit? Theres a bunch of bumpers and engine lids and seats, they said oh, it was taken to the scrap metal place in yesterdays trip. I hauled ass to the scrap metal place but all that was weighed in was already disposed of at 5:00 pm the day before so I was fucked.
Trust me. I was so ashamed this could happen that I couldnt sleep that night.
Anyways, Im over it. I'll just concentrate on the most important, another decklid, front bumper and front seat. All the other stuff like rear bumper apron etc I can find anywhere.
Suprisingly they did not toss my NOS cargo doors or the middle seat.

RecyclOwned.

That sucks! i would have had the movers pay for the loss.

Scotty Mon Sep 18, 2006 12:50 am

That sucks. I wish I could help...

mynameismud Mon Sep 18, 2006 5:47 am

damn skim... i wouldn't feel ashamed- def. not your fault...i'd be kicking and screaming to be compensated for those parts. (not like it matters in this day and age, where no one takes responsibility and fixes their screw-up)

not that it matters coming from me - but good luck...would like to help- but not too many useable BD parts around here.

UZI Mon Sep 18, 2006 6:38 am

i got the sense that the people hired didn't work for a moving company, they were some cheap labor who prolly took the $36 they got for scrap and went to denny's.

i've taken stuff to the scrapyard. they pick it up with a giant magnet and drop it in the heap. by they time you pull out and get to the end of the block, another truck with a dumpster has pulled in and buried the stuff.

Skim, sorry to hear about the lost parts. That sucks! Not that it will make you feel any better, but I once lost some nice parts and kicked myself for weeks after losing them.

I scored 50 (fifty), 1966 only, NOS emergency flasher pull switches for a total price of $100 from a shop in San Diego. They were complete and perfect. I had them all in a white grocery bag in the back seat of my car. I went to the movies with my kids and asked them to gather up all their trash in the back seat. The bag of switches got scooped up with the old McDonald's bags and other garbage....and into the trash can at the theater. On the drive home I realized the bag was gone. Back to the theater for some dumpster diving but no luck finding the switches.

Not as bad as losing BD parts, but it was a bummer that 50 nice switches ended up at the dump.

We all got your back SKIMBO!! I got my eyes peeled for your stuff, from when you told me. It sucks but it will work out in the end. This is kinda like when Linda came out of the closet for liking young Korean boys dressed up in school uniforms. Though I didn't tell him it would get better. He still says that he's not in the closet, but I keep insisting there is a glass door!!!

And regarding Cuba........let's go homie! I have a cousin who is a big shot hotel manager at some where in Cancun. We can meet down there, party......then fly into Cuba for almost nothing! Then hit every one up for the stash. I am down for that and I know the French Kid, aka Negro-sourous-rex is down too!! Linda needs to have Tom sign his "trip slip".

I might have a front bumper with the deluxe trim....can some one please verify the length of the bumper trim to make sure this is correct.....the bumper came off a post barndoor 55 deluxe in Mexico.

RockStock Tue Sep 19, 2006 11:27 am

dougie

from memory:
approx 825mm tip to tip following the curve of the trim, from above
approx 740mm tip to tip as the crow flies

doesnt the early bumper always have the captive nuts for the number plate

easy way to tell?

sorry to hear of the loss. that would take the wind out of anyones sails

i have had several wolfsburg bumpers and id say maybe half of them had no sign of ever having the nuts installed. i cant imagine theyd be that common to just fall off. its been my speculation that maybe anything that came to US didnt run the nuts. maybe they were installed on a bumper when it was ordered specifically for other countries than US?
