There are some people that believe these are VW, and there are others that take advantage of this and try to rip off uneducated VW enthusiasts, both on ebay and on this site.
The following pics are standard equipment on DKW, Amphicar, Borgward and Goliath Hansa cars, and are NOT made for any VW.
This is a DKW
This is a Borgward Isabella
This is a Goliath Hansa
This an Amphicar

Even though it isn't original or correct for a VW, that is still a nice looking steering wheel on the Borgward.

Yes it is nice.
Most of the standard equipment horn buttons from the 1950's had the coat of arms of the city or a landmark from where the cars were made. Some examples are.
DKW - Ingolstadt http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingolstadt
Borgward and Hansa - Bremen http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/de-hb.html#coa
Porsche - Porsche which consists of the coat of arms of Württemberg and Stuttgart
Amphicar - Lubeck castle
VW - Wolfsburg castle |

Here are some scans from sales brochures showing steering wheels that some might say are VW, but are not:
If you click on the pics, they are shown a bit larger and clearer.
This is a Ford Taunus 12M 1955
This is a Goggomobil Coupe
This is a Borgward Isabella
This is a Gutbrod Superior. There were so many cars that had the 3 spoke steering wheel. BMW Isetta, Tempo Matador are a few more.
Does the rear view mirror/light look familiar?
This is a Glas 1204

which one? I have two. ;) I got the second one because a friend of mine noticed the one on my bus and called me up when he found one in a junkyard to ask if I wanted another one. sure makes me glad I didn't leave it on the parts display shelf.
(this photo shows it on a three-spoke bus wheel which uses the normal batwing style base) note how the sun is reflecting off of the sun.

Maybe it's just the lighting, but the wheel looks a little "fat" at the ring. It has a more modern look IMO. (I like it thought. 8) ) |

Damn, Game Over! That wheel is beautiful.
Yes, I agree, the catalogs were not always right, people would and could order what they wanted back in the day. All these strange crossover of parts inconsistent with catalogs etc. is also a source of ongoing discussions in Porsche stuff as well, options, seats, accessories, tools etc. etc. My old double ringed Petri in my fake Intermeccanica Speedster (correct horn button and mount not shown).

Isn't this steering wheel supposed to have three lights around the horn button? Mine does

| Yes it does, if you notice I noted it that I didn't have it on my wheel. Your wheel is in incredible condition. The best I have ever seen. I don't think I have seen more than 5 of this wheels worldwide. Unfortunately mine was crusty and didn't want to risk it at the time from further deterioration by exposing it to the harsh Australian sun and given its extreme rarity. |
