View original topic: Torsion arm clips- source?
sctbrd Tue Jul 01, 2025 11:47 am

My tire rubs the inner wheel well because the torsion arm stop is worn or was ground down in the past.
I just finished centering the steering box and doing the alignment, so I am sure there is nothing with the tie rod setup.
The stop is reduced on both sides.
The Bentley shows a clip that can be used to stop the rubbing.
Is there a source for a clip like this, before I try a more creative solution?

I don't know of anybody selling them (maybe ISP is). You might want to look thru the "local manufacturing" book to see if they show them there. It doesn't look to hard to make one. I'd also look thru the Samba classifieds to see if anyone is selling them (maybe the type 3 detectives?).

I've never really seen these during my time at ISP. I also can't remember the last time I've seen any come up for sale.

The local manufacturing book might be a good start. I can do a quick glance when I get some time.

Yeah, those were my only thoughts on them or who might have them. I've never seen them in the wild in person either.

Yeah, I thought he'd probably be one of the few places that might have them, if anybody did.
They're not really commonly used.

I know his page is very funky retro :D But, he is well known in the community.

A long while (decades) back, I needed them on one side. Turns out I had a bent torsion arm, and when replaced, I didn't need it anymore. I'm pretty sure I chucked them a couple of moves ago. Really hurt the turning radius for u-turns.

Maybe a large thick worm clamp could add a little help there? You could add thin rubber under it to "tune" the thickness.

Yeah, that was my thought, along with having a beetle rim (wrong offset on that side).

The next part of the Bentley page says that is the turning radius is too large with the clips, you can grind the stops down, but to be careful of the clearance.
It looks to me a PO may have done this, since both sides look to be ground down and the same amount.
Unless they constantly slammed the steering against the stop on both sides very hard and wore them down that much!!

I wanted the clips, and if there is some reason they are too much for turn radius, Ill add a spacer of some other kind- the hose clamp is a great idea.
