Good night!

I have to ask two very important questions to you... I am not going to cry about the work done there. I just ask you for answers. Now it is time to undo what has been done wrong. So, how to arrange it?

First question:

-Which is the distance between the motor compartment wall and the interior heating tube?

i made a circle to show this small flat area. In this picture this area is in front of the tube; comparing to this EB's picture, where the tube is over the flat area... why?

Second question:

-How is this possible? Which side is wrong?

Please, don't criticise please. Work is almost finished, I don't want to fight with them right now.
Thank you very much...

Moderator note:
Actual heater log piece measurements from later in this thread:
joe56vw wrote: someone asked for measurements of the heater log I have for sale so I thought I would share them with the masses as well
I did a search and didn't find this info and I also don't know what year this one came out of either

tube length is 24 3/8"

tube diameter is 2 3/4"

there are four big slotted holes with a space in between two of them
space is 4 1/4"
big slot length is 2 9/32"
big slot width is 15/32
small slot length is 2 1/64
small slot width is 5/16

1st question EV's pic looks right, i can ck my 60 15 tomorrow for you.
2nd it looks like something Mario did  . That is totally fucked and they should fix for free. The drivers side is right and the other will stick out like a damn sore thumb. Your welcome to show this post to them and they are welcome to call me about my statements. The best thing you can do is yank the thing and don't pay the full amout for such an amature job. I dosen't take a rocket scientist to see the mistake there. Good god i can see that and i have been welding for 30+ years, and half blind.
I wouldn't cry i would be raising more hell than a little, and posting their info all over the net and town for that mess. It's shit like that that give honest craftsman and restorers a bad name.
Sorry if i'm blunt but thats just the way i am, if you want the truth i'll give it to you and no damn sugar coating. Some hate me for that and some respect me. Your call.

Edited to fix errors from painkillers

Here's the dimension you want for heater outlet from the end of the cargo floor.

8-5/8" as shown = 8.625 in. = 22cm
This is from my '61 Standard.

I don't see the problem with the rear engine apron. I must be missing something?

Look below the tail light opening for the extra 3" of corner that shouldnt be there.
Even an amature (spelling?) like me could do (and have done) better work.

I would be speaking with them sternly first thing in the morning about their plans to rectify that huge mistake.

Stanagon Mon Dec 18, 2006 9:24 pm

I see it now. Although it's pretty dark. I was looking at the tapered ends of the apron.

That will be hidden by a bumper, if it's any consolation. Sometimes you just gotta get away from a bad shop while you can, before they do any more damage.

Campy Mon Dec 18, 2006 11:56 pm

You certainly shouldn't pay for the slipshod work done on the right corner panel. Was the body man drunk or something? Get reimbursed and have it done properly somewhere else.

That shit won't be hidden by the bumper. Even if you put hide it behind US Spec bumpers it's only gonna make it more obvious. Hell I'm 1000's of km away and I can see it  They screwed up plain and simple. If it's a busy local shop complain directly. IF that doesn't get it fixed for free go public locally with your information. Bottom line is if they have any sort of integrity they will fix it for free. If they don't then drive as much business away from them as you can. It'll be cheaper in the long run for them to just fix it.

I know this has been a VERY long wait for you but OMG that's BAD!!!

Cocoabean Tue Dec 19, 2006 12:31 am

That's total bullshit, I'd track down 'Rudy.

Campy Tue Dec 19, 2006 1:18 am

Over the last several decades, I sued, in small claims court, an owner of a travel agency and a VW mechanic--I won both cases and it was very easy to do.

Pau Tue Dec 19, 2006 9:28 am

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhht!!!! Don't talk so loud. I am afraid if they see this comments they will just be mad and don't do the work.

Any single thought that could cross your minds (Metalwizard and others) has already crossed mine thousands of times! So, you must know how do I feel...

You must know that yes, they are going to fix it for free. That was obvious... What I would like to know: How many of you put together everything before painting just to see if everything fits correctly? Is this a normal way of doing?

Thank you for all the informations. I am going to mail them the distances Stanagon. You even gave it in cm !!

Take it easy everyone. Cocoabean: Rudy does not work for them anymore...

pyrOman Tue Dec 19, 2006 9:40 am

Though you probably have good reasons for having a shop do the work, this is but one of the reasons why I always do as much as I possibly can of any work needed on ANY of my vehicles. Hell, I'm now "responsible" for the wife's '04 Jeep since it's out of warranty already!

For one thing, I don't trust nearly any place out there and those few that I do trust, just plain CAN'T afford them! :|

BarryL Tue Dec 19, 2006 10:00 am

Don't different cut off years have the heater outlet in closer or farther? You probably said which year, though huh. I'll go away now.

This is my '63. The heater tubing got larger in 1964, which alters the look of the rear floor heater outlet piping. I don't think the distance changed but your Bus may be different.

Pau Tue Dec 19, 2006 10:42 am

thank you!!!
luckily I did not send any information nor picture to them... (even if normally they should know cause they are pros!!).

Could anybody take a picture of a post-64 heating tube and the distance between it and motor compartment wall?

THANKS THANKS THANKS AGAIN!!

Major Woody Tue Dec 19, 2006 10:45 am

Anytime you take apart a vehicle and cut body sections off, you always preassemble the vehicle before paint and check the panel fits. It is time well spent because then you don't have to go back and redo your work.
While they're fixing the screwup on the rear corner, have them fix the seam at the side of the battery tray too!

Somebody else will have to step up for this request. My '65 bus is a panel, with no heat outlet.

Mowser Wed Dec 20, 2006 1:22 am

Sorry Pau, I'd help with a picture or two but my '67 is in the booth getting sprayed. It should be done by Friday and I'll be going down with my camera if you haven't gotten a picture by then...

Pau Wed Dec 20, 2006 1:41 pm

thank you... I could even wait until monday if you want. Take your time
