Lucas Grams wrote: I read somewhere the hanging closet (not to be confused w/clothes closet) was optional, possibly because of the blind spot in the rear it causes. Maybe Westfalia.com is where I read that. I don't know. Interesting to see that interior installed in a walk through.

I know it is strange the walkthroug because you can't walk to the back because of the "kitchen", maybe the first onwers choose this because it is only good to use with 2 people so you don't need the middle seat. But it is original this way because of the m-codes, also on the papers of the bus you can see the so-44 was installed directly on the sale.

this is the M-code, sorry have no readable picture

17 8

056 080 119 181

2312 523654 6012403

On the german papers:

art des kraftfahrzeuge: So.Kfz 44 (sonderfahrzeug 16 s.$.7)

Das fahrzeug (mit Hubdach) ist mit einer wohn- und schlafeinrichtung ausgestattet

Gemeldet dem kraftfaht-bundesambt: 23 Sep 1965

This is standing on the papers, in my opinion it is original (with stamps from german goverment)

Greetings Dimitri

This m-code stuff is interesting. I'm just learning to use the code table on the samba.
Clara, if this was an original installation would it say so in the m-code? Or would the install have come after the plate stamping anyway?

17 8 = 17 Augustus (year was removed from 1965)

056=Steering/ignition lock
080=Split front seats (walk-through)
119=Eberspacher BN4 gas heater
181=Chrome hubcaps

2312= (231)Cargo doors right, left hand drive (2)Nitro-Lacquer finish

523654= Model Number/Paint finish (can't find the color)

6012403= VIN Number

The car did get the plates in september 1965 so there is a gap of one month, in that time te SO-44 interieur was installed bij westfalia (westfalia bought combi's to build there campers)

this is how far i got.

That M-code plate says Westfalia to me.
Nice!
Wouldn't mind seeing pics of the Westfalia papers! That's nice to find those with the bus.
The colour code 523654 is on this page near the bottom: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/colorstype2.php as pearl white
(westfalia color. Westy bound buses were painted differently than regular kombis)

There are some westys with no westy codes on the M-code tag. They tend to be more interesting ones, and have no port code (delivered in Germany) See this link:

Maybe you understood me not right (my english is not so good). The papers I have are papers from the german goverment. In germany everything that is on/in the bus or changed must be mentioned and aproved by the local goverment (stamp with date). My bus was original in aug 65 a 9 person combi, them changed in sep 65 to a 6 person camper by westfalia. The first time the bus was sold was on 23 sep 1965.

So the bus was bought by westfalia from VW changed to SO-44 and then sold on 23 sep 65 as a camper and not as a 9 person combi.

The color is perl weisse with samt grun (perl white/ velvet green?)

When i have time i can scan those papers.

That's a SO44 kit up to '67 and a SO69 68 and later.

Fivehundred SO44 were built. What made the SO44 about 690,- DM expensiver than the SO42 interieur? That was not the only reason why they all bought SO42. Because of the hanging "clothes cabinet" in the rear of the car, you can not look out of the rear window.

Has anybody a picture of the original gas or petrol cooker??
Do any of you westy experts know where I can have the infamous "clothes cabinet" or "headache tray"restored or where I can get the right material to restore for my SO 44? I live in So Cal and would like to do business locally but will go where I have to. Thanks

Post picts of the damage so we can better answer you. Best bet buy cabinet pieces and piece it together. What is wrong with yours, chips or sunlight damage?

Where in socal? There are at least three people that can duplicate that flawlessly.

I live in Whittier which is just east of LA. The cabinet is in great shape it just needs the formica and the molding replaced. Just want to have it match the rest of the camper unit which is OG. I can bang metal and make them run but when it comes to woodwork I have two left thumbs.
Thanks again.
