Could someone recommend a good method of stripping paint besides shelling out the cash for media blasting. I've tried some liquid stripper with no luck. Will a wire wheel work without damaging the metal. Thanks

I've used Aircraft stripper (I think that's actually the brand name). It's pretty serious stuff. Be sure you wear the right gloves or it'll burn the skin off your fingers.
I also use a random/orbital sander - depending on exactly what I want to do.

Any chemical paint stripper with Methylene (or Methyl) Cloride should work just fine. Find some with the highest concentration of active ingredient (mine says 990gm/litre). Lay it on thick, wait for the paint to bubble-soften and then use a metal scraper to remove the paint. Some paints are more resistant that others.
Use heavy rubber gloves (not latex - they fall apart) and saftey glasses - it's rough on skin and eyes.
And if you have some left over, you can make some dandy carb cleaner with it - dissolve 10% paint stripper in 90% kerosine - it's the same active ingredient in both products.

I was using the Aircraft brand stripper yesterday on my 51 split. That stuff is hard core! Take my advice, wear some rubber gloves and a longsleeve shirt and have a bucket of water close by cuz if it gets on your skin, the water instantly neutralizes it and it wont burn the heck out of you! |

Hey Bigchevy;
My guess is that you learned to wear rubber gloves and a long-sleeved shirt the hard way. It only takes once to realize the manufacturers mean it when they say to do that, huh?
