View original topic: cabriolet fuel problem??
[email protected] Sat Mar 22, 2003 10:35 am

My 89 Cabriolet decided yesterday that it was not going to start. No prior symptoms. I have a spark going to plugs, plugs are good, so I'm assuming it's a fuel problem, perhaps filter or pump. I'm not familiar with fuel injection. If I disconnect one of the fuel lines going to the injectors, should fuel shoot out of it when the engine is turned over? I tried this and all there was, was barely a drop would come from it. I have not tried replacing the fuel filter yet because all my tools are in my 67 doublecab which is broken down in San Diego!! Ahhhh, the joy of owning a Volkswagen!!!

turn on the ignition and hae someone listen under the passenger rear floor to hear if the fuel pump is buzzing. if its not, you might have blown a fuse, or a relay, or even the pump.

Bosch fuel pump relays are known for failing, pull the relay take the cover off and heat and reflow the large lump of solder, might help might not but at least its free and it did work for me.

or you can go to your FLAPS and buy a new relay for around $15 and be done with it...

If you want to test the relay, male a jumper wire with a male spade connector on each end (To the peanut gallery: SHADDUP.) Take the relay out and put one end into recepticle 30 and the other to 87- I think, the two slots you want should form a "T". If the pumps come to life, you can drive the car with the jumper wire but PULL IT OUT every time you're done driving or the pumps keep running even with the key off. Get a new relay ASAP. If that doesn't help, you need pumps- One in the tank, one under the car. ALWAYS replace both. Make sure you have power to the pumps, natch, before you condemn 'em.

This sounds like my problem. I was driving my 89 cabriolet (automatic) and when turning a right corner it died. I am getting spark However, I am not getting fuel when the lines disconnected at fuel filter. It was mentioned that it could be a relay or fuse. Where is fuel pump relay located and what number is it? If it is a fuse which one would it be?
