Hi,
I just purchased 1956 cali plates and 61 sticker for my 61 bug, but havent placed the 61 sticker on yet. The plates came with a 62 sticker. before I bought it I made sure that it was DMV cleared . I called DMV and they informed me that the plates are not in thier system which means I can register it, I just need to bring the plates in so they can see the condition of the plates. What I want to know is when I register the plates should I put the 61 sticker before I bring it in or just leave it with the 62 sticker and put it on later? I read and I was told not to put the 61 sticker till after I register itn and some say remove the 62 sticker and put the 61 sticker on since my bug is a 61 then register it. some say remove the 62 sticker and register it and when done place the 61 sticker on plate. I need info on anyone who has gone thru this YOM process.
Thanks |

Remove the 62 decal first. Then bring in the plates to the DMV office. Chances are, you'll get a clerk who is totally unfamiliar with the YOM program. After they actually look up the plate & they confirm you can use it, only then would I apply the '61 decal.
I attempted to get some plates registered to my 1961 Beetle last year. After phoning in the license digits, they told me the plates were clear. But when I went into the DMV office and they started the paper work, onlythen did it come known the plates were already in-use. |

Because 1956-62 plates are designate in a 3 letters/3 numbers format. These numbers can be recycled to newer cars up to 1975? When California plates were updated to use 7 digits.
Same with Pre '55 plates. The format used on Pre '55 California plates follow the same format being issued on Commercial vehicles today. |
