View original topic: Hazards work but turn signals do not..

Hey just combing through things on the new 73 beetle and was checking turn signals and such. I get the hazards to work and blink and everything but when I hit the turn signals I get no lights outside and a solid green arrow inside no blinking inside on the dash or outside at the lights. But the hazards blink just fine inside and out. ALSO not sure if this has something to do with it but there is an aftermarket steering wheel installed. Horn works.. thanks!

What flasher unit is in the car?
Original flasher switch or aftermarket?
Can you use a digital volt ohm meter (DVOM)?
Do you have a DVOM you can use?

It is the original flasher switch.
I do have a digital volt meter yes

What of your flasher unit (relay)? Is it OE VW or aftermarket?
Often the flasher relay is replaced by the PO with a "generic" relay. Some generic relays will not work with the VW wiring. A proper flasher relay will have the proper terminal numbers: #31, #49 (+) and #49a.

Since the corner lamps work with the E-Flasher switch we know the wiring is good. The first place to check is the turn signal fuse (fuse #12). The E-Flashers circuit and the turn signal circuit are powered from two different fuses allowing one system to work while the other doesn't.

If the fuse is good, remove the turn indicator lamp from the speedo. Replace the empty bulb holder. Now test if the turn signals work? The indicator lamp is what usually gives the generic flasher relays fits. If removing the bulb makes a difference, reconnect the bulb and see if the problem returns.

I have much of the same issue. I started out with the super crappy halogen replacement bulbs with the turn signal in them, and a bumper with turn signals. Some PO took the turn signals off of the front fenders.
I had one turn signal for each side. The right head light would blink and the left bumper light would blink.
Then I replaced the headlights with h2604's and they are great! but I lost my right side turn signal.
So I get to pokin around and cut the original wire from the fender/bonnet. It is hacked and F-Dup. I replace this spaghetti mess with a single wire to the bumper light and Voila! It works great on the right side, but now I lost my left side.
Rinse and repeat on the left side and I have no blinkers at all, but my hazards work just fine!
The fuse is fine, everything is solid from ground to power. All my connections are tight and sealed... so WTF?
I have LED's in all 4 corners and the flasher relay for LED's so I don't hyper blink.
All wrapped up in a '70 sedan.

Maybe this diagram from Speedy Jim's site will help...

You can see that the output of the turn signals and the output from the E-Flasher switch come together and share the same wires to the corner lamps. So if all four corner lamps work for either the turn signals or the E-Flasher the wires are good.

If the right front turn signal was working and then stopped working when you wired the left front I'd say you bumped a connection somewhere and the wire came loose. Especially if the E-Flasher is still able to light up all four corners.
