In my 72' Super I've just filled up the tank for the very first time and am smelling gas under the hood and into the cab. The local auto store doesn't seem to recognize the inlet hose into the tank. What is this hose called and where can I find a replacement.

I usually experience a faint smell of gas under the hood when I open it but not in the passenger compartment, but fumes could get in there if the gasket around the fresh air fan compartment (I have a 79 super) is not sealing properly. I don't know the name of the hose you refer to, but another spot you might want to check is the round recess in the middle of the tank where a couple of wires are attached. That's the fuel gauge sender, and the round cap unscrews off the fuel tank. If the gasket under the cap is not seated right you could get fumes leaking from there. Yet another place for a leak would be where the hose comes out of the tank near the bottom into the fuel pump which is behind the right front wheel.

Okay, not really. What 79SuperVert is good. I would also suggest one more thing. Several times one of my sons has gassed up my 71 Super and has not gotten the gas cap on quite right. As a result, it was dribbling just enough gas out to give us a pretty hefty smell in the car.
Wishful thinking, but who knows?

Thanks for the support. :) Well, I checked the seals and it appears that it may be a weak seal on the fuel gauge sender. I've ordered a new one, and also ordered a fuel delivery hose. Hopefully this will alleviate any problems.

One more question reguarding the fuel system. I have an inline disposable filter. I've read to take that out and replace it, that it's dangerous. Which one do you guys recommend? Where, if not in the engine compartment do I install it? Is this something I need to change immediately before I drive it any?

My fuel filter is behind the left front wheel, just above the electric fuel pump. I don't know if yours is there. If it is, what I did was loosen the clamp holding the fuel filter to the wall, pull the filter / hose/ pump assembly away from the wall so I could work on it better. I clamped the hose leading from the tank to the filter closed with padding inbetween the jaws of the clamp and the hose, then, with a basin under the filter, I pulled the hose off the filter and let the gas drain into the basin. Then I removed the old filter and installed the new one (available from any big auto parts store) with the arrow pointing in the direction of the fuel flow (away from the fuel tank). Then I unclamped the hose and put everything back. If the hoses are cracked you need to replace them, as otherwise you'll have one hell of a fire hazard. I need to replace mine but of course I keep putting it off.
