Its actually a 1951 Deluxe and that pic was taken at the 1951 Autosalon.I have posted a pic in the gallery of it,not sure how to attach pics here.
Pretty cool graphics and a nice break away from the traditional colours of the time.
If you look closely at the photo, its hinting at one of the 'improvements' made later by Volkswagen,it has a sunvisor fitted that later on would become part of the peak on the 'improved' March '55 onwards Buses.

I think it's actually Grey on Grey like Drew O's '51 Standard. VERY early color scheme.

What happened to Drew? Does he still own the 51?

Hi Simon- Yes, I believe he still does. He is a member here on the samba and his screen name is micro9301 after the chassis number of that very Bus.

Some pics from 10 minutes ago, proof that the 51 is alive and well. They will get some nor-cal sun this afternoon.

You know that Berliner is multiple for Berlin , great Big city in Germany. If i'm not mistaking..

Berliner would mean Berlin's.

Quoting JFK 'Ich bin ein Berliner': I'm a citizen of Berlin
(or actually i'm a Jelly Doughnut. I'm a citizen of Berlin would be Ich bin Berliner)

Berliner is genitive for Berlin, meaning 'Berlin's', or 'of Berlin'

Today Berlin is the capital of Germany, at that time Berlin was the capital of the DDR, the Deutsche Demokratische Republik, or the German Democtratic Republic, aka eastern Germany.

cris torlasco Sun Mar 18, 2007 5:55 am

Berlin's symbol is a bear, as shown in the front door of that bus. I wonder if it went around the world in some kind of factory-sponsored publicity tour. If so, it would be a treat to see some of the photos...
