Hi all, I just purchased this script and was hoping someone could help me date this or tell me if it was a dealer option or if it came on some kind of special edition beetle. I could not find anything on it on sebeetles.com. Thanks

I've seen one of those before... once. So maybe it is pretty rare?

This is by no means an answer, just some conjecture. In the late 60s-early 70s one of the big East Coast VW Performance companies was an outfit called Motion Minicar. They did their advertising with a race car called the Thunder Bug. Wondering if they ever came up with a lightning bolt emblem for one of their production kits? If I have time, I'll root through the two old catalogs of theirs I have and see if there's anything in them.

I believe that the Lightning Bug Script was a Dealer Accessory, perhaps exclusive with the Volkswagen Atlantic Distributorship for Pennsylvania and Delaware. I remember having these in stock when I was a VW Dealer Parts Manager in Pennsylvania. I'd guess that they were from 1970. I had a NOS one from back then and picked up another at a swap meet at Lehigh Valley VW in Allentown, Pa. probably mid-70s.
