For those of you that have these plates, where do you guys put your registration stickers? I know DMV gives you those cheesy tabs but is that the only way. There is the one space next to the 56 on the plate for one sticker but no space for the second. Any ideas would be helpful.

Here is an interesting article with links about using the YOM plates in California. It's on the Porsche 356 Registry site:

Yeah. Just call 800-777-0133. When I got through to an operator I gave her a list of about 30 different plate numbers and she punched them in the computer and told me weather they were clear or not. I was lucky to get someone at the CA DMV who was actually helpful. I never thought I would see that day.

I think this is what most people do. I never see any tags on the plates. Do you ever get pulled over and hassled for it?

I thought the '56 plates weren't part of the "deal".

Nope. I don't think most Police even know that the YOM are supposed to have up-to-date Tags. They probably think of them the same as a Historic Vehicle Plate. Even if you do get pulled over, it would probably only be a fix-it ticket.

Here is were I put mine. In the beginning (1983-84) they only sent you one tag that had the year & Month. then they started sending 2 but I didn't get another little piece of metal for the month tag so I didn't put it on I just kept it in the glove box.

question about yom 1951 to 1955 california plates is it true that imust have a plate that starts with three numbers than three letters or vice a versa to be able to register that plate to a passenger vehicle

the DMV said it had to be this way because a plate i have starts with a number and then a letter and can only be registered to a truck since it starts with a number than a letter

has any one heard of this??? is it true

The plates you are talking about...'51-'55 have the same letter/number sequence that the current TRUCK letter/number sequence have....So, for you to use those plates they have to not be currently being used by a CA registered truck...and those have been in use for many years. The person you talked to probably wasn't born when they started using that sequence for trucks, so they haven't a clue. Call back and maybe you will get lucky and talk to a person over 40....or 50.....

but if the number sequence is for a truck can I still use those for a "passenger car" if thier DMV clear

Yes you can.....When those plates were new in 1951 that letter/number sequence was made for passenger cars.
