I have a question for those in Washington state (not DC). Do you have to title a buggy as a kit or specialized car or as a standard VW? Is there a special designation as far as liscence plates if you do have to register as modified? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I tried get my buggy licenced the so called legal way and as anyone else will tell you, Is it really worth the hassle? I finally just registered it as a Vw bug with the pan numbers and I run the collecter licence plate on the rear. If you do this you must make sure your insurance policy has the words dune buggy on it and the company your using has pics of the buggy you are insuring.
Hope this helps!!

I am going to be doing this myself pretty soon. I'm taking the body off of my '69 and putting it on my '73. So, I'll have a titled '69 chassis with nothing to do. I've already got it registered as a '69 bug with collector plates. In fact, this morning, I stopped by a VW restoration place in Anacortes and asked them since I was curious about this as well. The guy told me to just keep it registered as a '69 bug but just make sure your insurance knows what it is. Also, ofcourse, you want it to be as street legal as you can with lights, signals, horn, windshield, etc.

I have mine licensed as a 1964 VW bug as per the Vin number.

Insured as the same. The first insurance card I had said Dune Buggy on it but the successive ones did not.
